WACO, Texas ÃÆ' ¢Ãƒ ¢' ¬" The Baylor women's tennis team went 1-1 in two singles matches on the opening day of the Bush's $50,000 Waco Showdown Sunday at the Hawkins Indoor Tennis Center.

Junior Blair Shankle picked up a 6-2, 7-5 triumph in the first round of the 32-person singles qualifying draw at the USTA Pro Circuit event. The Dallas, Texas, native needs to win two more matches in the qualifying draw to get into the main draw, which begins Tuesday.

After earning her way into the qualifying draw by winning October's wildcard event, Kelley Anderson suffered a 6-1, 7-5 setback to world No. 249 and the draw's No. 2 seed Barbara Haas of Austria. The loss knocks the BU sophomore out of the singles competition.

Rain forced the action inside the Hawkins building, after matches were scheduled to be played outside at the Hurd Tennis Center.

On Monday, Blair Shankle will play the qualifying draw's No. 1 seed, Florencia Molinero of Argentina, at 10 a.m. at the Hurd Tennis Center in the second round of the singles qualifying draw.
