Baseball Leads League with 13 Academic All-Big 12 Selections

IRVING, Texas- Thirteen Baylor baseball student-athletes were named to the 2014 Academic All-Big 12 Baseball Team (12 first-team selections), the league announced Thursday. The Bears led the league in selections for the second straight season and set a school record for total selections.

The Bears' 13 honorees broke the previous school record of 11 (2009, 2013) and marked the sixth season in a row with at least nine selections. BU also had the lone person with a 4.0 GPA in Doug Ashbyon the 66-man list (43 first team).

In the league's 18-year history, Baylor student-athletes have earned 112 first team selections, 38 more than any other school in the conference. Former member Nebraska (74) ranks second, followed by Oklahoma State (71), Kansas (60), Texas (58), former member Missouri (55), Oklahoma (54), Kansas State (55), Texas Tech (47), former member Texas A&M (33), TCU (10) and West Virginia (5).

Along with Ashby (mechanical engineering), BU's honorees are Logan Brown (electrical and computer engineering), Ben Carl (prebusiness), Brett Doe (exercise physiology), Nate Goodwin (biology-prehealth), Brad Kuntz (entrepreneurship), Lawton Langford (finance-real estate), Bobby McCormack (general studies), Matt Menard (prebusiness), Grayson Porter (finance), Drew Tolson (finance) and West Tunnell(exercise physiology).

Among Baylor's honorees, Langford earned the distinction for the third time. Ashby, Brown, Goodwin, Kuntz and Porter each garnered the accolade for the second time.

The Bears' lone second-team selection was Duncan Wendel (mechanical engineering), who earned the second-team nod for the second straight season.

First-team members have recorded GPAs of 3.20 or better, while second-team members have posted GPAs between 3.00 and 3.19. To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or during the two previous semesters.

All position players must participate in 60 percent of their team's games. Pitchers are required to have at least 1.0 inning pitched per team game or participate in 20 percent of their team's total games. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Seniors with a minimum of two years participation who meet all criteria except participation percentage also are eligible.
