THE RUNDOWN
HOUSTON, Texas - Whitney Canion threw her second consecutive shutout to help No. 12 Baylor (29-7) beat Houston (24-11) 3-0 in game one, but the Cougars jumped out early in game two and held off the Lady Bears for a 3-2 win in the nightcap.

Canion (16-5) matched a season-high with 13 strikeouts and threw an eight-inning complete game shutout without walking a hitter to lead Baylor in game two. After being no-hit through seven innings, Baylor had three runs and three hits in the top of the eighth highlighted by Jordan Strickland's game-winning double scored Sarah Smith.

In the second game Houston scored the first two runs before Holly Holl doubled home Clare Hosack to cut the lead to one. However, the Cougars' Haley Outen responded with an RBI double in the bottom of the fifth to extend the lead to 3-1.

In Baylor's final opportunity at the plate, Sarah Crockett singled with one out in the top of the seventh, Christy Lisenby drew a walk and Kaitly Thumann doubled home a run leaving two runners in scoring position with one down. However, the game ended on Baylor's groundout and flyout leaving the tying and winning runs stranded.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Whitney Canion pieced together her second-straight shutout and matched a season high with 13 strikeouts. It was Canion's 37th career shutout and 108th career win.
  • Liz Paul tied Lisa Ferguson (2004-07) for the all-time Baylor lead for relief appearances (55) with her appearance in game two.

24 - Baylor's 24th batter of game one, Holly Holl, was the first hit of the game for the Lady Bears following Sarah Smith's walk, setting up Strickland's RBI double, Liz Paul's RBI groundout and Christy Lisenby's RBI single.

Baylor will play host to No. 13 Oklahoma in the team's second full Big 12 series in Waco Friday thru Sunday.
