The Baylor softball team placed a league-high 10 student-athletes on the Academic All-Big 12 team, including a conference-best nine on the first-team, the conference office announced Thursday. The 10 team members, which last occurred in 2010, tie for the second-most in program history behind the 11 selected in 1998.
Junior Liz Paul highlighted Baylor's selections as she was just one of four student-athletes to be nominated with a 4.00 GPA.
Whitney Canion (Management), Kelsi Kettler (Business) and Kathy Shelton (Speech Pathology) earned first-team nods for the third time. Paul (Business) picked up her second, first-team award, while Courtney Repka (Education) was named to the squad for the second time and first-team for the first time. Joining them on the first team are first-time members, Linsey Hays (Business), Jill Reid (Business), Jordan Strickland (Communications) and Kaitlyn Thumann (Health Science Studies).
Junior Holly Holl (Business Education) was named to the academic squad for the first time in her career, earning second-team honors.
Nominated by each institution's director of student-athlete support services, the Academic All-Big 12 Softball Team consists of 41 members. First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, and the second team are those who have a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.
To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher (either cumulative or the two previous semesters) and must have participated in 60 percent of their team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
