BU Head Coach Steve Smith
On Mercurio's homer:
"The thing you have the most control over is the lineup, then you have almost no control over [the outcome]. When things like [Mercurio's night] happen it is scary. I wanted to get him an at-bat, so I decided to start him. I fully intended that if he walked or got a base-hit that I was going to put a runner in for him and allow him to come off to a standing ovation and tip his hat. But, then he hit a home run and it was awesome -- then he gets back up and hits a double."
On how the team played tonight:
"I thought our hitters looked pretty fresh. The guys who pitched were sharp and we turned some plays. We played well behind our pitchers."
On the hitting of UTSA:
"They are a very good offensive team. That was the best UTSA offensive team that I can remember, they swung the bat well. I am proud of the job that [UTSA Associate Head Coach] Jim Blair has done with them as a former Baylor Bear. To see him coaching and his hitters do such a good job, that's a good moment for them."
Wes Mercurio
On his homerun:
"I didn't know what the lineup was going to be during batting practice, but I felt that if he [Coach Smith] gave me an at bat that I would hit one out. I thought I had a good chance to hit one. I hit it off the bat and it felt good."
On the nine-day break:
"We all needed a break, most of the team was beat up from the long season. Most guys were done with finals before last weekend so a lot of guys had time to rest and not think about school. That really helped us."
On the final series at Texas Tech:
"We know that we have a good chance to end up in the top three of the Big 12 if we win the series. That'd be really big going into the Big 12 tournament."
