LAWRENCE, Kan. - No. 14 Baylor (37-13, 8-6) held a 5-1 lead heading to the bottom of the seventh and held on for a 5-4 win over Kansas (30-15, 5-7) to take the series victory Sunday afternoon at Arrocha Ballpark in Lawrence.

Of the nine combined runs allowed by pitchers, five were unearned, as the game featured six total errors, three for each team.

"I am proud of the way this team fought through adversity today," head coach Glenn Moore. "We treated this game with a lot of importance, so credit Kansas for giving us everything we could handle."

Kaitlyn Thumann paced the way offensively, hitting her fourth home run of the year as part of a two-hit day. Robin Landrith added a pair of runs, going 1-for-1 with two walks.

Whitney Canion (21-6) got the win, throwing 7.0 innings, giving up just one earned run, walking five and striking out five.

After a two-run seventh inning, the Lady Bears held a 5-1 advantage heading to the bottom of the sevent. Canion surrendered a leadoff walk to Maggie Hull before Alex Hugo grounded into a fielder's choice, but the errant throw from Jill Reid to Jordan Strickland allowed Hull to reach safely. Chaley Brickey followed with a single to left to load the bases with no outs. Maddie Stein would then hit a popup between Canion and Clare Hosack that saw the catcher dive for the ball that hit the dirt, deflected off her and roll into the dugout to score a pair of runs. Canion regrouped to get a fly out to center field before Reid caught a low-liner at second for two outs with runners at second and third. Miriah Montgomery hit a single to right field to bring Kansas within one, but Canion got Newman to strike out looking to end the game.

Leading 3-1 heading to the top of the seventh, Baylor added two insurance runs that proved to be clutch. Landrith drew a one-out walk and advanced to second on a groundout by Shelton. Holly Holl then laced a single to center field for an RBI, scoring Landrith, and reached third when the ball went under the center fielder's glove. Thumann followed with a grounder off the glove of the first baseman that rolled into shallow right to score Holl for the 5-1 lead.

Baylor jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the third when Justine Young scored from third on a wild pitch with two outs. Canion led off the inning with a single through the right side and was pinch run for by Young. A sac bunt from Hosack put Young at second before a wild pitch advanced her to third.

KU squared the game in the the fourth with a two-out RBI-single that scored Salmone, who reached on a throwing error by Strickland.

The Lady Bears grabbed their lead back in the fifth when, following a pitch, the throw from the catcher back to the pitcher went over her head into the outfield to score Landrith from third with two outs

Thumann made it a two-run cushion when she took the first pitch of the sixth over the left field fence and off the light pole to make the Baylor lead 3-1 in the top of the sixth.

The Lady Bears will host Texas Tech for Senior Weekend in a three-game series from May 2-4. Thursday's game will be nationally televised on ESPN beginning at 7 p.m. The game will be "Green Out Getterman" with the first 750 fans receiving gree t-shirts.
