WACO - No. 16 Baylor (34-11) came away with a split at North Texas (19-20), falling 5-3 in game one before a 2-1 victory capped off the doubleheader Wednesday night at Lovelace Stadium in Denton.

"Sometimes you have to risk losing one at this time of year in order to win one when you really need it," head coach Glenn Moore said. "These were important midweek games for us to be able to use our bullpen and bench. Now we will take a few days off and come back ready for the final stretch of the season."

Game One
All three Baylor runs came via home runs, but six extra-base hits by North Texas doomed the Lady Bears, 5-3 in game one.

Sarah Smith had a pair of RBI off her home run, while Holly Holl totaled the other with a solo home run of her own.

Liz Paul (1-1) took the loss, allowing seven hits, five runs and striking three in 3.0 innings.

The Lady Bears jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning, as Sarah Smith blasted her fifth home run of the year, a two-run shot over right center. Kaitlyn Thumann hit a one-out single up the middle and stole second to reach scoring position.

Baylor made it 3-0 on a solo homer from Holly Holl in the third with two outs, just clearing the fence in center for her fourth of the season.

North Texas came back to tie the game in the third, as four doubles scored three runs for the Mean Green, making it 3-3.

The Mean Green took a 5-3 lead in the fourth, as Taylor Schoblocher led the inning off with a solo home run to center and was followed by Bryana Wade's solo shot to left center.

That prompted a pitching change, as Heather Stearns came on in relief, allowing just two hits in her 3.0 innings of work and stopping the Mean Green momentum.

Baylor would get just two hits the rest of the way, including Kelsi Kettler's two-out double in the seventh, but Clare Hosack came on and popped out to third to end the game.

Game Two
The Baylor pitching staff combined for six strikeouts, allowing just three hits for a 2-1 win over North Texas in game two.

Courtney Repka (5-0) got the start and win, allowing three hits, one walk and three strikeouts in 5.0 innings. Whitney Canion earned her third save of the year, giving up a hit and a walk to go with three strikeouts in 2.0 innings.

Holl had the lone RBI, while Shelton each of the Lady Bears' runs to pace the offense.

Baylor jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first, as Holl singled up the middle to score Shelton from Second. Shelton led off the inning with a walk and was sacrificed over by Thumann to reach scoring position.

North Texas evened the in the bottom of the second on a two-out single up the middle that scored Paige Kisiling from second, who reached on an error at second.

Baylor looked to have a runs score in the second when Canion hit a ball up the middle, allowing Strickland to score. However, Strickland, who led off the inning with a double off the left field wall, was ruled to interfere with the shortstop making the play and was called out.

The Lady Bears got a little help from the UNT defense in the third, crossing a run across on an error with two outs. Smith hit the ball to the shortstop's left that went off her glove and into center, scoring Shelton from third. Shelton drew a one-out walk, advanced to second on a groundout and made it to third on a passed ball.

Baylor began a two-out rally in the seventh, as Shelton doubled to left center and Thumann followed with a single to short. A Holl walk loaded the bases for Smith, prompting Ashley Kirk coming in to pitch, who struck out Smith to strand the bases loaded.

Canion gave up a leadoff walk to start the seventh, but Clare Hosack fired to first to Jill Reid, who was covering, for the pickoff and first out. Following a grounder to third, Canion got a strikeout to end the game.

The Lady Bears will be off until hosting Houston in a doubleheader on Tues., April 23 beginning at 4 p.m. Both games can be seen on Fox Sports Southwest Plus.
