WACO, Texas. - The Baylor pitching staff carried the day both in the circle and at the plate, leading the Lady Bears (5-2) to a sweep of Southern Miss (2-7) Tuesday evening at Getterman Stadium. BU took game one 3-0 before coming back for a 2-1 win in the nightcap.

Junior Whitney Canion, senior Courtney Repka and freshman Heather Stearns combined for 22 strikeouts in 14.0 innings pitched, allowing just six hits and one unearned run. Offensively, Canion and Stearns combined for three of the team's four RBI on the night, including a walk-off solo home run from the freshman.

"I thought our pitching was terrific once again," head coach Glenn Moore said. "We have to start being more aggressive at the plate, but I am proud of this team's effort."

Game One
Canion's 12 strikeouts and two RBI were enough to push the Lady Bears to a 3-0 victory in game one. The Aledo, Texas, native picked up her second win of the year, going 5.2 innings, giving up one hit and two walks. Repka picked up her first save of the year, finishing off the game's final 1.1 innings with two strikeouts.

Kaitlyn Thumann went 3-for-4 with a run scored, while Kathy Shelton added a pair of hits and a runs scored.

Canion struck out eight in the first three innings, striking out the side in the first and third. The Lady Bears jumped on the board in the first, as Shelton singled and advanced to second on the error before swiping third. With one out, Linsey Hays hit a ball to right center that was dropped by the center fielder, allowing Shelton to score for a 1-0 lead.

Baylor added two more runs in the third on a two-RBI single down the left field line, scoring Thumann and Holly Holl for a 3-0 lead. Thumann led off the inning with a single, while Holl drew a one-out walk to put runners on for Canion.

The Lady Bears nearly extended their lead in the fifth, as Holl led off the with a double to left followed by a Hays single up the middle to put runners on the corners. With two outs, Sarah Smith drew a hit by pitch to load the bases for pinch hitter Bailey Chalmers, who popped up to short to end the threat.

Game Two
Heather Stearns hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh, capping off a 2-1 comeback win in game two.

Stearns (2-1) earned her second-straight victory, going 7.0 innings, allowing five hits, one unearned run, walking one and striking out eight.

Tied at one in the bottom of the seventh, Stearns took the first pitch over left center for her first career home run and a walk-off victory.

The Lady Bears, who trailed for 4.1 innings, tied it with two outs in the sixth on an RBI-double from Holl. Shelton laced a two-out single to left center and stole second to reach scoring position. Holl then hit a towering fly to right center that fell between the right and center fielder, scoring Shelton to even the game.

The Golden Eagles took the lead in the second, as a passed ball through the legs of Chalmers got to the backstop and scored Mackenzie Sher from third for the 1-0 advantage. Stearns battled back to record back-to-back outs and squander another USM run.

Baylor will be back in action on its home field, hosting the Miken Classic from Feb. 15-17, leading off with Northern Colorado at 3:00 p.m. on Friday.
