Honolulu, Hawaii - Led by Thea Munch-Soegaard's double-double and Alyssa Dibern's 15 kills, Baylor (5-1) disposed of San Francisco (4-3) 3-1 (25-14, 22-25, 25-22, 25-19) Sunday afternoon on the final day of the Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Classic. Baylor's .282 hitting percentage was the second highest of the season.
"I challenged our offense before the match and they delivered," head coach Jim Barnes said. "When our serve-receive is good, so are we. I think we learned a lot about ourselves in this tournament, and it's something that will be a huge benefit to us as the season progresses."
Munch-Soegaard recorded her second double-double of the tournament (13 kills, 17 digs) and third of the season to go with four blocks, while Torri Campbell had a season high 11 kills and four blocks. Alyssa Dibbern added 15 kills and four blocks of her own and Kate Harris dished out 49 assists. Dibbern's .519 hitting percentage was the highest of the season for a BU player.
Baylor took control with a middle attack early and found itself up 15-9 and swinging .500 with 13 kills, forcing the Dons to call a timeout. The 8-0 run continued off the serve of Torri Campbell, leading the Bears to a 19-9 advantage and eventually a 25-14 set win. Munch-Soegaard led the attack with five kills, while four other BU players totaled three apiece. Baylor registered 18 kills on 32 swings for a .531 hitting percentage in the opener.
BU and USF exchanged points early until the Bears finally took control at 12-11 and maintained the lead until the Dons made a comeback to take a 21-19 advantage. Baylor rallied to tie it at 22, but San Francisco closed with three-straight points for the 25-22 win. Munch-Soegaard again led with four kills in the game.
Down 12-11, Baylor completed a 5-0 run to make it 16-12 in the third set. Up 23-19, the Bears were able to close out for a 25-22 win. Dibbern totaled five kills in the set to go with two blocks, while Campbell added four kills. Defensively, Munch-Soegaard continued her solid defensive play with eight digs.
Tied at 11-11, Baylor went on a 10-2 run to take a 21-12 lead en route to a comfortable 25-19 win. Dibbern continued to dominate, totaling five more kills in set four.
