DURHAM, N.C. - Baylor men's golf is tied for fourth place after day one of the third annual Rod Myers Invitational. The Bears shot 7-over-par 583 over 36 holes on Saturday at the Duke University Golf Club.
Baylor (+7; 298-285=583) enters Sunday's final round tied with Iowa (+7; 288-295=583). Duke (-2; 287-287=574) is the current tournament leader, followed by Charlotte (E; 285-291=576) and North Carolina (+5; 288-298=581).
"It was great seeing the guys bounce back and have a low round this afternoon," head coach Greg Priest said after the Bears improved 13 strokes from the first to second rounds. "We struggled early, but we settled down. This group is resilient and refuses to quit. It's still a young group, and hopefully we can come out focused and ready to play tomorrow."
Senior Ryan O'Rear (-1; 72-71=143) and sophomore Filippo Zucchetti (-1; 74-69=143) lead all Baylor players and are tied for sixth place overall at 1-under-par. Mikkel Bjerch-Andresen (+5; 76-73=149) finished day one tied for 36th place, while Kyle Jones (+7; 79-72=151) and Niclas Mansson (+7; 76-75=151) are tied for 42nd place through 36 holes.
Zucchetti's second-round 69 was four strokes better than his previous career-best round, and his 143 36-hole total was eight strokes better than his previous best of 151. His second-round total was one of only 10 scores below 70 out of the 128 rounds played during the day.
"Filippo played awesome, especially on the back nine this afternoon," Priest said. "He hit the balls really well today."
Sunday's championship round will tee off at 7 a.m. CT, with Baylor players slated to go in 10-minute intervals starting with Jones at 7:10 a.m. Mansson tees off at 7:20 a.m., followed by Bjerch-Andresen, O'Rear and Zucchetti, respectively. Live stats are available through www.GolfStat.com.
