OKLAHOMA CITY - For the second straight day, an error led to a big inning against Baylor, as Texas took advantage of a defensive miscue to plate three unearned runs in the fourth on its way to a 6-1 win on Thursday morning at RedHawks Ballpark.
With the loss, Baylor (29-26) was eliminated from the Big 12 Conference Championship after two games - the fourth time the Bears have gone winless in 15 appearances at the Big 12 tournament.
The Bears took advantage of Brooks Pinckard's speed to take an early lead, but Texas (41-14) starting pitcher Taylor Jungmann kept the Bears off the board for the next eight innings. He retired 16 consecutive batters after issuing a two-out walk to Logan Vick in the second.
"I thought Josh (Turley) threw extremely well. He made a lot of big pitches early in the ball game," head coach Steve Smith said. "I thought we competed at the plate well. We didn't punch-out a lot. Taylor Jungmann is really, really good. I always enjoy watching him pitch. It is more enjoyable when it's against someone else, but he is very, very good."
Brooks Pinckard drew a leadoff walk, stole second base and moved to third on a wild pitch. Max Muncy followed with a RBI single to give the Bears a 1-0 lead after sending just two batters to the plate in the game. Muncy's single proved to be the only hit allowed by Jungmann (13-0) in a complete-game one-hitter with four walks and seven strikeouts.
Baylor starter Josh Turley retired the first seven batters in the game before a one-out single and an error and a walk loaded the bases in the third, but Turley escaped by striking out Tant Shepherd.
Texas again loaded the bases in the fourth, but this time Turley couldn't work his way out of the jam. Eric Weiss led off with a single, and Paul Montalbano's sacrifice bunt attempt was fielded by Turley, who fired to second base in plenty of time to get the lead runner, but Jake Miller was ruled to have come off the bag early while attempting to turn a double play.
A bunt single then loaded the bases, and Kohl Walla gave Texas the lead with a two-run single. Brandon Loy later added a two-run double, giving Texas a 4-1 lead with a trio of unearned runs.
Turley (3-5) took the loss despite allowing only one earned run. He went 5.2 innings, allowed six hits and four runs and two walks and four strikeouts. Kolt Browder, Brad Kuntz and Max Garner combined to allow two runs on five hits in 3.1 innings of relief for the Bears.
Baylor's only baserunners after the second inning reached when Joey Hainsfurther drew a leadoff walk in the eighth and Pinckard worked his second walk of the game leading off the ninth inning.
Baylor's berth in the NCAA Division I Baseball Championship will now depend on an at-large bid. The selection show will be televised live on ESPN at 11:30 a.m. Monday. The Bears are projected by numerous media outlets to make their 12th NCAA Regional appearance in the last 14 season.
