WACO, Texas - A wild nine-run sixth inning provided plenty of offense for Texas as the No. 8 Longhorns knocked off Baylor, 11-3, in the opener of a three-game series on Friday night at Baylor Ballpark.

Taylor Jungmann (7-0) earned the win for Texas (23-7, 8-2 Big 12). He struck out 10 without issuing a walk and allowed two runs on five hits in 8.0 innings.

"The story of the game is Taylor Jungmann; that is the only story in the game. He was just big time tonight," head coach Steve Smith said. "He not only had overpowering velocity, but he was also right on the money."

Baylor (17-14, 4-6 Big 12) lost for the sixth time in its last seven games. The Bears got all three of their runs on solo homers, two off the bat of Cal Towey and one from Max Muncy. Logan Verrett (3-3) took the loss after allowing six earned runs on 10 hits in 5.1 innings of work.

"I thought Logan competed well," Smith added. "I thought the whole environment elevated him early in the game. A year ago I thought he out pitched Jungmann, but tonight he didn't."

Texas struck first with a run in the top of the second on Paul Montalbano's two-out RBI single, but Verrett settled in and allowed only one hit to the next 10 Texas hitters. Jungmann kept the Bears off the board, stranding Towey at third base after he hit a one-out triple in the bottom half of the second.

The Bears had a chance to take get on the board after consecutive one-out singles in the third, but Jungmann again retired the next two batters, and Baylor only had traffic on the bases one more time in the game, when Lawton Langford was hit by a pitch in the eighth.

The Longhorns broke the game open in the sixth with nine runs on seven hits with two walks and two errors. Eric Weiss led off the inning with a double to right-center that Towey lost in the lights. The next three batters all hit safely, and after a flyout, Montalbano reached on an error. After a walk and a Brandon Loy single, Verrett handed the ball to Tyler Bremer out of the bullpen.

Bremer allowed a RBI single and a two-run double before escaping the inning, but Texas had built a 10-0 lead.

Muncy homered to right-center with one out in the bottom of the sixth, Towey led off the seventh with a solo shot to right field, and Towey capped the Bears' scoring with another homer in the ninth. Texas got its final run on Montalbano's RBI double.

Weiss and Lot each went 3-for-5 for Texas, while Towey had half of Baylor's six hits and accounted for a career-high 11 total bases with two homers and a triple in a 3-for-4 effort.

The Bears will look to even the series when the teams meet against at 3 p.m. Saturday in Waco. A pair of sophomore left-handed pitchers square off as Baylor sends Josh Turley to the mound against Texas' Hoby Milner. Sunday's series finale in Austin is scheduled for 1 p.m.
