Women's Tennis Places Four on Academic All-Big 12

IRVING, Texas - Four student-athletes of the Baylor women's tennis team earned Academic All-Big 12 honors, as announced by conference officials on Tuesday. It marks the third time the Lady Bears have placed four or more on the league's all-academic team.

All four earned first-team honors, including three-time selections Taylor Ormond and Karolina Filipiak. Jelena Stanivuk was honored on the first team after being selected to the second team each of the past two seasons. Junior Nina Secerbegovic was also honored on the first team for the second time.

Ormond, a senior English major from Hamilton, Ontario, has battled through injuries, but has posted six singles victories and an 11-5 record in doubles action this season.

Filipiak, a senior psychology major from Poznan, Poland, is second on the team with 27 singles wins and earned a singles rank as high as No. 74, while also posting 16 doubles wins.

Stanivuk, a senior marketing major from Tucepi, Croatia, has a team-best singles winning percentage of .917 with her 22-2 mark, including a current-10-match win streak. She is ranked No. 116 in singles and also has 13 doubles victories.

Secerbegovic, a junior computer information systems major from Tuzla, Bosnia, is fourth on the team with 23 wins against only four losses in singles to rank 47th in the NCAA. She is also second on the team in doubles victories with 19.

Overall, a total of 45 women were named to the squad with 37 first-team and eight second-team selections.

Nominated by each institution's director of student-athlete support services, the soccer academic all-league squad consisted of 81 first team members combined with 22 on the second team. First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, and the second team are those who have a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.

To qualify student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of their team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.

Baylor, ranked No. 7 in the nation according to this week's Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings, will be in action as the No. 1 seed in the Big 12 Championships in Waco, Texas. The Lady Bears will take on the winner of Missouri and Oklahoma State on Friday, April 29 at 6 p.m.
