HUTCHINSON, Kan. - Baylor men's golf carded its best round of the tournament, but was unable to gain any ground, remaining in eighth place Tuesday after three rounds at the Big 12 Championship. No. 43 Baylor is tied with Nebraska at 46-over-par 886.
Top-ranked Oklahoma State widened its lead to 12 strokes after shooting 10-under-par during Tuesday's third round. No. 7 Texas A&M is in second at 17-over-par, followed by No. 14 Texas, No. 18 Texas Tech and No. 28 Oklahoma. Only one golfer remains under-par through 54 holes as Oklahoma State's Morgan Hoffmann owns a three-stroke lead (3-under-par 207) over teammate Kevin Tway (even-par 210).
"Conditions were really good, but we didn't get the job done," head coach Greg Priest said. "Our goal now is to finish as high as we can Wednesday. We're going to give it everything we have until we run out of out holes."
Sophomore Jerry Ruiz fell one stroke shy of his 18-hole career low, carding a 1-under 69, and is tied for 25th overall at 10-over-par (76-75-69=220). Ruiz posted Baylor's first sub-par round of the Big 12 Championship and was one of 14 golfers to shoot under-par Tuesday. After starting 1-over through three holes, Ruiz shot 5-under over the ensuing five holes, including an eagle on the par-5 No. 17. A bogey on No. 2 and a double-bogey on No. 8 dropped Ruiz to 1-under for the day.
"Jerry (Ruiz) played really well on the back nine and put together a solid string of birdies and an eagle on 17," Priest said. "The front nine played pretty tough. He made a mistake on No. 8, which is the toughest hole on the course."
Joakim Mikkelsen and Cody Paladino are tied for 29th at 11-over 221 after shooting 73 and 74, respectively. Ryan O'Rear is tied for 43rd after shooting a third-round 77, while Payne Gniewek stands in 57th at 24-over 234.
"(Ruiz) gave us a good round, which is what we needed," Priest said. "We just needed more from everyone else."
The final round of the 2011 Big 12 Men's Golf Championship will tee off Wednesday at 8 a.m. CDT. Live scoring will be available at www.GolfStat.com.
