COLUMBIA, Mo. - Behind an even-par 72, Baylor junior Jaclyn Jansen is one stroke off the lead Friday after the first 18 holes at the 2011 Big 12 Women's Golf Championship.

Jansen's 72 is the lowest Big 12 Championship first-round score in program history, besting Ali Brewer's 73 in 1997. The Effingham, Ill., native is one of three golfers tied for sixth place, while five golfers share the lead at 1-under 71. Jansen's only two birdies of the first round came at the right time as the junior birdied her last two holes to finish at even-par.

Heavy rains Friday morning caused a three-hour delay, pushing first-round tee times from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. CDT. Lightning at 4:55 p.m. forced a second delay in the action, but it was short-lived as the remaining teams were able to finish their first rounds.

Baylor also carded its best Big 12 Championship first-round score in program history with a 301. The previous low was a 304 at the 2004 Big 12 Championship; the Lady Bears finished fifth that year. The Lady Bears are only three strokes behind fifth-place and just seven shy of first-round leader Texas Tech.

"Obviously the three-hour weather delay made it difficult for everyone Friday," head coach Sylvia Ferdon said. "We had to lift, clean and place once we walked on the course. The greens were tough, which produced some high scores."

Seniors Lene Hafsten-Morch and Morgan Chambers are tied for 18th overall at 3-over 75. Baylor's leading scorer entering the Big 12 Championship, junior Chelsey Cothran, is tied for 49th at 7-over 79. Cothran failed to record a birdie, registering seven bogeys on the day. Freshman Kaylin Terry is tied for 57th at 8-over 80.

"We didn't have a (good) fourth score today," Ferdon said. "If we had a (good) fourth score, we would be top-three easily. If we can get that fourth score Saturday, that will be great.

"The ball-striking I saw Friday was outstanding," Ferdon said. "Hopefully our talent can get us in the clubhouse Saturday with four clean scores."

The second round of the 2011 Big 12 Women's Championship will tee off Saturday at 9 a.m. CDT. Live scoring will be available at www.GolfStat.com. Baylor, paired with Iowa State and Kansas, will be a part of the first five groups starting from the No. 10 tee box.
