WACO, Texas - For the second time in a week, Megan Turk delivered a walk-off, this time on a sac fly to right center to lead No. 17 Baylor (28-5, 2-1) to a 3-2 win over No. 11 Missouri (27-5, 4-1) on Saturday afternoon at Getterman Stadium. The crowd of 1,211 was the second highest of the season and 12th best all-time.
The win snapped a six-game losing streak to Missouri, and marked the first win over the Tigers since April 29, 2007.
"We knew how tough it was going to be to get runs off Chelsea Thomas," head coach Glenn Moore said. "We fought every at-bat and got a total team effort. Whitney (Canion) was fantastic today, and Megan (Turk) just seems to have a knack to deliver in the clutch."
KJ Freeland and Clare Hosack paced the way with two hits apiece.
Canion (15-4) picked up the win, going 7.0 innings, allowing six hits, two unearned runs, three walks and 10 strikeouts. Her 10 strikeouts mark the sixth 10-plus strikeout game of the year and 22nd of her career.
With one out in the seventh and runners at second and third, Megan Turk took a 1-1 pitch to right center for a sac fly that scored Kathy Shelton from third for the win. Shelton led off the inning with a single to second and advanced to second on a single to left center from Freeland. A passed ball put both runners in scoring position, setting the stage for Turk.
The Tigers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first on a two-out, two-RBI single down the third base line by Catherine Lee. With runners at first and second and one out, a grounder to first was thrown low over to third, allowing the runner to reach safely and load the bases.
Baylor cut the lead in half in the third, as Sydney Wilson and Shelton led off with back-to-back singles. Following a pair of groundouts, and with runners at second and third, Holly Holl was intentionally walked, and Dani Leal came in to pinch hit, drawing a bases-loaded walk for an RBI.
The Lady Bears pulled even in the fifth, when Freeland singled to lead off the inning and advanced to second on a sac bunt from Turk. With two outs and Freeland at third, Kayce Walker singled to short to score Freeland and tie the game at two.
The win gives Baylor a 8-3 mark against ranked teams so far in 2011.
Thomas (13-3) took the loss, going 6.1 innings, allowing 10 hits, three runs, two earned, two walks and eight strikeouts. Thomas, who entered the weekend with the nation's best ERA, 0.62, had given up just 39 hits in 94.2 innings coming into today's game.
The teams will wrap up the series on Sunday at noon at Getterman Stadium.
