No. 22 Baylor (20-2) used a three-run fifth inning to defeat San Diego State (8-11) 3-0 on Tuesday at Aztec Stadium. Dani Leal's RBI-double in the fifth broke the scoreless tie, leading the Lady Bears to their seventh shutout victory.
"A win is a win, and at the end of the day that is what matters," head coach Glenn Moore said. "We have some areas to work on, but now we have to focus on a big series with Arizona."
Whitney Canion (9-1) picked up the win, going 4.0 innings, allowing two hits, walking one and striking out four. Courtney Repka earned her second save of the season, coming in for 3.0 innings, allowing one hit, walking two and striking out one.
San Diego State threatened in the second with a single up the middle to begin the inning, but a double play on a popped up bunt to Megan Turk at third was caught and fired over to KJ Freeland at first for the double play.
Baylor broke a scorless tie with three runs in the fifth. KJ €ˆFreeland led off the inning with a walk, and with one out, Kayce Walker hit a grounder to short and reached on an errant throw, allowing Freeland to reach second. Megan Turk loaded the bases with a single to center before Leal ripped an RBI-double over the center fielder's head for a 2-0 lead. Following a Canion single, Holly Holl laced an RBI-single up the middle to score Leal for the 3-0 advantage.
A leadoff double in the seventh for the Aztecs was all they could muster, as Repka shut the door with three-straight outs.
Baylor will now travel for a three-game series at No. 4 Arizona beginning on Friday, March 11 at 7:00 p.m. CT.
