HOUSTON - Baylor jumped out to an early lead, but Utah scored two runs in both the fourth and fifth innings and held the Bears to one hit the rest of the way to take a 4-3 win on Saturday afternoon at Minute Maid Park.
With the loss, Baylor (5-5) is 1-1 heading into its final game in the 2011 Houston College Classic against Rice at 2:30 p.m. Sunday.
The Bears got strong relief pitching from freshmen Dillon Newman and Trae Davis, but Utah's Ben Mordini and Tyler Wagner were just as good, as they held off the Baylor bats with 3.0 innings of one-hit shutout relief.
Zach Adams earned the win for the Utes, allowed three runs - one of which was earned - one three hits with six strikeouts in 6.0 innings. Trent Blank allowed four runs in 4.2 innings to take the loss for the Bears.
Baylor plated two runs in the first when Brooks Pinckard's bunt was mishandled and Logan Vick brought him around to score with a triple to the hill in center field. Vick scored on Max Muncy's RBI groundout, but Adams held the Bears scoreless in the next two frames.
Blank retired the first nine Utah batters before James Brooks singled leading off the fourth. Michael Beltran laid down a bunt to try to advance Brooks to second, and Josh Ludy's attempt to get the lead runner was too late. C.J. Cron followed with a RBI single, and two outs later JoJo Sharrar drew a bases-loaded walk to tie the game at 2-2.
The Bears quickly regained the lead in the bottom half of the inning. Ludy drew a leadoff walk and scored on Landis Ware's two-out RBI single, putting Baylor back on top 3-2, but that lead wouldn't last long.
Brooks singled and Beltran drew a walk to put two on with one out in the fifth. Cron delivered his second RBI single in as many innings to tie the game at 3-3, and after Blank got Shaun Cooper to ground into a fielder's choice for the second out, Cody Guyman put the Utes back on top with what would prove to be a game-winning RBI single.
Newman came out of the bullpen to get the final out in the fifth, then put up zeroes in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings, allowing only two singles and striking out two. Davis worked a perfect ninth, but Ware's leadoff single in the seventh was the Bears' only hit after the fourth inning. Wagner earned his second save in as many days by working a perfect ninth.
Ware had half of Baylor's four hits, going 2-for-3 with one RBI, while Vick and Muncy each drove in one run. Cron and Brooks both went 2-for-5 for Utah.
The Bears wrap up the Houston College Classic with Sunday's game against Rice. Sophomore Josh Turley is scheduled to make his first weekend start for the Bears against Rice freshman John Simms.
