HOUSTON - Logan Verrett allowed only one earned run in 6.2 innings, and Baylor's 16th-ranked baseball team took a 5-2 win over Houston on Friday afternoon in the first game of the 2011 Houston College Classic at Minute Maid Park.

Verrett (2-1) struck out seven while walking two and giving up seven hits before turning the ball over to Crayton Bare, who struck out Ryan Still for the last out in the seventh.

"He worked out of some issues early," head coach Steve Smith said of Verrett. "I thought his best inning was probably the sixth, so I let him go back out there for the seventh and he was off to a good start."

Bare also got the first out of the eighth before Brooks Pinckard moved from center field to the mound to pitch the final 1.2 innings to close out the win. Pinckard allowed only one hit and struck out three to record his second save of the season and the 15th of his career.

Jake Miller had his first three-hit game in a Baylor uniform, going 3-for-4 and scoring a run. Landis Ware drove in a pair of runs as part of a 2-for-2 effort, and Max Muncy added a triple and a single for the Bears.

Baylor took an early lead when Cal Towey walked, Miller singled and Ware followed with a two-out RBI single in the second inning, and the Bears added on single runs in each of the next two innings. Pinckard tripled with one out in the third and scored on Logan Vick's RBI groundout, and Ware brought Josh Ludy home with a sacrifice fly to give the Bears a 3-0 lead in the fourth.

Verrett gave up his only earned run of the game in the fifth. Jake Runte singled, John Cannon walked and Ryan Still hit a two-out RBI single. Runte was nearly caught at the plate, but Vick's one-hop throw from left field got away from Joey Hainsfurther. Verrett then got a lineout to strand the potential tying runs on base.

Baylor took advantage of a pair of errors to extend its lead to 5-1 in the sixth. Relief pitcher Taylor Hammack quickly retired the first two batters of the inning, but Towey drew a walk, Miller hit his third single in as many trips to the plate and Ware walked to load the bases. Steve DalPorto hit a grounder in the hole at shortstop and Chase Jensen's throw to second was wide, allowing Towey and Miller to score.

Houston chased Verrett with two outs in the seventh. Runte doubled and advanced to third on Vick's fielding error, and Cannon followed with a sacrifice fly to cut Baylor's lead to 5-2. After Landon Appling singled, Verrett gave the ball to Bare, who struck out Still for the final out of the seventh.

Bare issued a one-out walk in the eighth before turning the ball over the Pinckard, who retired five of six batters faced and struck out three for the save.

The Bears return to action in the Houston College Classic at noon Saturday when they take on Utah. Trent Blank is scheduled to start for BU against Zach Adams of the Utes.
