LAS VEGAS - The Baylor men's golf team slipped into a 13th-place tie after Saturday's second round at the Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters. Baylor (305-301=606) sits four strokes out of the top 10 at 30-over-par.

No. 23 Cal was one of three teams to post sub-par second-round scorers, along with No. 1 UCLA and No. 2 Oklahoma State. Cal leads the field by six strokes at 6-under-par; No. 11 Texas A&M is second at even-par, followed by Oklahoma State in third at 4-over-par. Two Big 12 golfers still stand atop the leaderboard; Texas A&M's Jordan Russell (9-under 135) leads second-place Morgan Hoffmann (7-under 137) from Oklahoma State by two strokes.

"We faced the same conditions (as Friday), but this is still a hard golf course," head coach Greg Priest said. "These are conditions we are not used to playing with high rough and fast greens and we're still getting adjusted to that."

Sophomore Ryan O'Rear carded Baylor's best second-round score with a 73, moving up to an 17th-place tie at 4-over 148. Jerry Ruiz is one stroke behind O'Rear in 24th at 5-over 149. Joakim Mikkelsen is tied for 49th with a score of 9-over 153, while Cody Paladino is tied for 59th overall at 10-over-par. Lorenzo Scotto is in 75th place at 22-over-par.

"Several teams came back Saturday and posted high scores, too," Priest said. "If we can put one good round together, we can move up significantly on the leaderboard."

While Baylor's first-round troubles were limited to the back nine, the Bears' struggles in the second round shifted to the front nine. For the second straight day, Baylor started on the back nine and drained eight birdies, while its five golfers combined to shoot 7-over-par. However, on the front nine, the Bears committed 18 bogeys, including a triple-bogey by Scotto and double-bogey by Paladino, who tallied an eagle Friday on the same par-5 No. 3.

"This is such a strong tournament and provides us with a great opportunity to prepare us for later," Priest said. "We still have one more round to improve our scores."

The final round of the Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters will tee off Sunday at 10 a.m. CDT. Live scoring will be available at www.golfstat.com.
