SAN ANTONIO - The Baylor men's golf team is in ninth place - only five strokes out of the top five - Monday through two rounds of the UTSA Oak Hills Invitational. Baylor bounced back from an opening-round 15-over 296 with a 3-over 287 in the afternoon to finish the day at 15-over 583.
No. 20 Texas Tech leads the tournament field by eight strokes at 18-under 550 after back-to-back sub-par rounds. No. 28 North Texas is in second at 10-under 558, while No. 40 Tulsa and No. 49 Oklahoma are tied for third at 4-under 564.
Fourteen golfers finished Monday under-par. Texas Tech's Tyler Weworski owns a one-stroke lead at 8-under 134. Oklahoma's Riley Pumphrey is second at 7-under 135. Louisiana-Lafayette's Philipp Fendt and Oklahoma's Ben Klaus, competing as an individual, are tied for third at 6-under 136.
"You could definitely see some rust in our play Monday," head coach Greg Priest said. "We got off to a rough start and you could tell we hadn't played in a while.
"We played better during the afternoon, but the damage was done from the morning," Priest said. "We have to play well Tuesday to make up some ground."
After firing a first-round even-par 71, Joakim Mikkelsen was Baylor's top performer Monday, finishing the day tied for 26th at 2-over 144. Mikkelsen entered the final seven holes at even-par, but bogeys on No. 18 and No. 1 dropped him to 2-over-par.
Lorenzo Scotto and Jerry Ruiz are tied for 34th after both carded 36-hole totals of 4-over 146. After shooting 7-over in the first round, Ruiz fired a career-low 3-under 68 in the second round. It was Ruiz's first sub-par round of his career.
"I followed Jerry during the first and second rounds," Priest said. "He got off to a bad start and really had only one bad hole that cost him in the morning. I hope what he did in the afternoon round is a sign of things to come."
Seniors Payne Gniewek and Cody Paladino are tied for 48th and 56th, respectively. Gniewek bounced back from a first-round 77 to shoot a 1-over 72 in the afternoon to finish at 7-over 149. Paladino is one stroke behind Gniewek at 8-over 150.
Junior Drew McGee, competing as an individual, is tied for 75th after firing an 11-over 153 through 36 holes.
