SORRENTO, Fla. - The Baylor women's golf team is in 12th place Sunday after the first round of the UCF Challenge at RedTail.
In the lead through 18 holes is No. 14 Tulane, which shot 4-under 284. The Green Wave owns a one-stroke lead over the tournament field. Coastal Carolina is second at 3-under 285, followed by host UCF in third place with a score of 2-under 286. Kentucky (1-under 287) and No. 37 Minnesota (even-par 288) round out the top five. Baylor is 13 strokes behind the Green Wave at 9-over 297.
"Overall, I'm pleased with our first-round performance," head coach Sylvia Ferdon said. "We dropped a few shots on the 18th hole, but, other than that, we made some adjustments throughout the day."
Baylor junior Chelsey Cothran is tied for sixth through 18 holes after firing a career-low-tying 2-under 70. She is only four strokes off the lead shared by Kentucky's Ashleigh Albrecht and Coastal Carolina's Jessica Alexander, who each shot a 4-under 66.
Cothran carded the best round Sunday by a Lady Bear as well as her second sub-par round this season. The Springdale, Ark., native birdied three of the first five holes, but a bogey at No. 15 dropped her to even-par. However, she carded back-to-back birdies on holes 16 and 17 to finish the day at 2-under.
"We should play better Monday," Ferdon said. "Chelsey (Cothran) turned in a great round Sunday and had a good game plan mentally."
Both Jaclyn Jansen and Jordan Rhodes are tied for 45th after posting 75s in the first round. Jansen was even-par through 17 holes, but finished the first round at 3-over 75 after a triple-bogey on No. 18. Kaylin Terry, making only her second career start in the Baylor lineup, is tied for 68th at 5-over 77. Lene Hafsten-Morch is tied for 87th after shooting 12-over 84 in the first round.
"We left some shots out of the course," Ferdon said. "There's still plenty of golf left, but we need to be ready to go when the second round starts."
The second round of the UCF Challenge at RedTail will begin Monday at 7:30 a.m. CST. Live scoring will be available at www.GolfStat.com.
