SORRENTO, Fla. - The Baylor women's golf team will travel south to open its spring schedule Feb. 13-15 at the UCF Challenge at RedTail. The three-day, 54-hole tournament will be held at the 6,319-yard, par-72 RedTail Golf Club.
Sunday and Monday will feature a 7:30 a.m. CST start, while Tuesday's final round will begin at 7:45 a.m. CST. Live scoring for all three rounds will be available at www.GolfStat.com.
2011 marks the fifth year of the UCF Challenge and the fourth year it's been held at RedTail. Nine of the 17 teams in this year's tournament field participated in the 2010 NCAA Regionals - Baylor, Coastal Carolina, East Carolina, Georgia State, Illinois State, Ole Miss, South Carolina, Texas and Tulane. The 17-team field also includes 15 teams ranked amongst the Top 100 nationally by Golfstat. Three of the last four NCAA champions have played in the UCF Challenge during the regular season - Duke (2007), USC (2008) and Arizona State (2009).
"Even with the bad weather in Central Texas, we've had some good practice days," head coach Sylvia Ferdon said. "Now it's time to tee it up and see where we stand."
Baylor is competing at the UCF Challenge for the second consecutive season. In the 2010 edition, the Lady Bears finished fifth, while Chelsey Cothran tied for sixth overall (5-over 221). Cothran will be one of four upperclassmen in the Lady Bears' lineup this year; she will be joined by senior Lene Hafsten-Morch, junior Jaclyn Jansen and senior Jordan Rhodes. Freshman Kaylin Terry rounds out the rotation, making her second career start in the Baylor lineup.
Hafsten-Morch led the Lady Bears with a 73.50 scoring average in four fall tournaments. Jansen and Cothran both averaged 74.00 through 12 rounds; Jansen and Hafsten-Morch each posted two top-10 finishes, while Cothran finished in the top 25 in all four fall tournaments.
"Our fall scoring was only one shot off our record low and our top three players - Lene (Hafsten-Morch), Chelsey (Cothran) and Jaclyn (Jansen) - are the best scorers I've coached," Ferdon said. "Those three will have to step up in order for us to start the spring season strong."
After the UCF Challenge at RedTail, Baylor will return to the Sunshine State for the Central District Invitational, which will be held Feb. 21-22 in Parrish, Fla.
