LAS CRUCES, N.M. -The 21st-ranked Baylor women's golf team shot an opening-round even-par 288 Monday and is one stroke behind the leader at the Price's "Give 'Em Five" Intercollegiate.
Senior Chelsey Cothran is tied for the individual lead with Idaho's Teo Poplawski at 3-under 69. Cothran's first-round tally tied a career low and is her third sub-par round of the season. Fellow senior Jaclyn Jansen is in a four-way tie for third place at 2-under 70. Jansen's first-round 70 was her first sub-par round of the season and first since the second round of the 2011 Big 12 Championship (nine rounds).
Long Beach State was the only team to record a sub-par first round, finishing at 1-under 287. Baylor owns a two-stroke cushion ahead of third-place Idaho (2-over 290). North Texas (5-over 293) and Colorado State (6-over 294) round out the top five in fourth and fifth place, respectively.
"As a team, we didn't play our best, but Chelsey (Cothran) and Jaclyn (Jansen) both played very well," first-year head coach Jay Goble said. "Hayley (Davis) didn't the strike the ball well and didn't make many putts. Stani (Schiavone) hit the ball well Monday, but she didn't score as well as she should have.
Only eight golfers carded sub-par first rounds, while seven others finished the day at even-par.
Freshman Stani Schiavone is tied for 22nd at 2-over 74, while reigning Big 12 Golfer of the Month Hayley Davis is tied for 27th at 3-over 75. Senior Valerie Sternebeck is tied for 46th at 5-over 77.
"We left some shots out there and this is a golf course that's very scoreable with the lineup we have," Goble said. "We didn't shoot a poor round by any means. I feel like we are the best team here and, if we stick to our game plan, we will do very well."
The second round of the Price's "Give 'Em Five" Intercollegiate will tee off Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. CDT. There is no live scoring for the event.
