WACO, Texas - Baylor baseball student-athletes Chris Slater and Willie Kempf earned ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VI honors, the College Sports Information Directors of America announced Thursday. Slater was named to the first team as an outfielder, while Kempf was honored as a second-team pitcher. Baylor joined Texas as the only Big 12 schools with multiple honorees.

This marks the fifth consecutive season in which at least two Baylor student-athletes have earned academic all-district honors, and the Bears have had at least one academic all-district selection in 12 of the last 13 seasons.

With his selection to the first team, Slater is eligible for Academic All-America honors. Aaron Miller was named to the All-America second team last season, marking the ninth time a Baylor player has earned CoSIDA Academic All-America honors since 1998.

Slater is a junior Business major from Plano, Texas. In addition to his perfect 4.00 GPA in the classroom, Slater is also enjoying a breakout season in the field. After making four starts in his first two seasons at Baylor, he has played in 34 games and made 20 starts in 2010. He ranks third on the team with a .356 batting average and a .430 on-base percentage. Additionally, Slater has three home runs, two triples and 17 RBI.

Slater was one of only seven players to earn academic all-district honors in the University Division with a perfect GPA.

Kempf, a senior captain and Business major from Castroville, Texas, has worked as both as starter and a relief pitcher in 2010. His five wins are more than any other Baylor pitcher, and his 4.15 ERA ranks fourth on the staff. Kempf has also struck out 53 batters in 52.0 innings over 16 appearances. His 120 career strikeouts in Big 12 action are the seventh-most in program history, and he is tied for fifth with 42 strikeouts in relief in Big 12 play.

Baylor returns to action after an 11-day layoff when the Bears travel to Lubbock, Texas for a three-game series with Texas Tech starting May 14. After the series with the Red Raiders, Baylor returns home for its final four games of the season, taking on Dallas Baptist on May 18 and Oklahoma State May 21-23.
