NCAA South Central Regional First Round Results in PDF Format
BRYAN, Texas - Baylor men's golf freshman Ryan O'Rear carded a career-low 69 and is tied for sixth place after Thursday's first round of the NCAA South Central Regional at Traditions Golf Club.
O'Rear, who is 3-under through the first 18 holes, is three shots back of the four leaders tied at 6-under 66 - Texas A&M's Ignacio Elvira, TCU's Daniel Jennevret, North Florida's Kevin Phelan and Wichita State's Dustin Garza. Nils Floren of Texas Tech is fifth at 4-under 68. O'Rear's first-round 69 bested his previous 18-hole low score of 71 set during last month's Big 12 Championship.
"You don't win a tournament on the first day," Baylor head men's golf coach Greg Priest said. "Today certainly wasn't what we were looking for and I thought we could have played better."
Baylor, which is making its 13th consecutive NCAA postseason appearance, is eighth overall after carding a first-round 3-over 291 Thursday. Texas A&M and TCU are tied atop the leaderboard after both teams shot 277 (11-under) - three shots ahead of third-place North Florida (280). Texas Tech is in fourth at 6-under 282, followed by Wichita State in fifth at 5-under 283.
"Ryan (O'Rear) and Cody (Paladino) both did exactly what we needed them to do today," Priest said. "Coming into this weekend, we talked about how we needed help from the bottom of our lineup. The bottom of our lineup played well today, but the top (of our lineup) did not."
Making only his fourth appearance of the spring, junior Cody Paladino shot even-par 72 to finish Thursday tied for 23rd overall. It was Paladino's first round of par or better since carding back-to-back even-par 71s at the 2009 Baylor Intercollegiate last October in Dallas. Both Payne Gniewek and Lorenzo Scotto are tied for 48th at 3-over 75, while sophomore Joakim Mikkelsen is tied for 62nd with a 7-over 79.
"We're a really good team when we get production from our entire lineup, but we just haven't been able to string together consistent rounds like that," Priest said. "We have 36 more holes of golf remaining and we need to chip away at the deficit between us and a top-five spot."
Round two of the 2010 NCAA South Central Regional is scheduled to begin with the first wave of golfers - including all five Baylor Bears - at 8 a.m. CDT Friday and continue in 10-minute increments. Live scoring will be available at www.BaylorBears.com.
