WACO, Texas - The Baylor men's golf team earned its 13th consecutive invitation to NCAA postseason competition Monday as the Bears were selected to compete at the 2010 NCAA South Central Regional in Bryan, Texas.
Baylor, the No. 9 seed, is one of 14 teams tabbed for the Texas A&M-hosted regional, which will be May 20-22 at the par-72, 7,146-yard The Traditions Club Golf Course. Joining the Bears in Bryan will be host Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Georgia, North Florida, TCU, Pepperdine, Auburn, North Carolina, Tulsa, Rice, Wichita State, Georgetown and Jackson State.
Prior to its 13th straight regional selection, Baylor finished sixth at the Big 12 Championship in Trinity, Texas, while sophomore Lorenzo Scotto and freshman Ryan O'Rear tied for 12th overall. Drammen, Norway, sophomore Joakim Mikkelsen leads the Bears with a 72.73 stroke average through 37 rounds, including a team-best nine top-25 finishes. Scotto is second to Mikkelsen with a 73.57 stroke average and 10 rounds of par or better.
It will also mark Baylor's second consecutive South Central Regional invitation. Last season, the Bears finished seventh overall at the 2009 NCAA South Central Regional in Stillwater, Okla.
Six 54-hole regional tournaments will be conducted May 20-22. Thirteen teams and 10 individuals not on those teams will compete at each of three regionals, while the other three regionals will have 14 teams and five individuals not on those teams. The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams from each regional will advance to the finals. Other regional sites include New Haven, Conn. (The Course at Yale); Atlanta, Ga. (Capital City Club, Crabapple); Notre Dame, Ind. (The Warren Golf Course); San Diego, Calif. (Carlton Oaks Golf Club); and Bremerton, Wash. (Gold Mountain Golf Club).
The 113th annual NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship will be conducted June 1-6 at The Honors Court in Chattanooga, Tenn., and will be hosted by Chattanooga.
