Recap | Box Score

Head Coach Steve Smith

On the game:
"It was really good to see Logan Verrett follow up what he did last weekend. I thought he was very effective, very sharp. He certainly pitched well enough to win. Their starter was very good. I thought he had good fastball command. I think more than anything right now, we have only gotten eight hits in two days. I think part of that is they are pitching us pretty well, but the other part is we are not swinging it well right now. That is just the way baseball is. Teams just go through stretches and we are in one right now. We need somebody to get hot, because it is contagious. I am hoping, the ninth inning right there, we struck a couple balls pretty good with Raynor (Campbell) getting one to go through the right side and then (Max) Muncy getting a double, maybe that is something the guys can build off of for tomorrow."

On Logan Vick's double play in the sixth:
"I don't think I have ever seen that; where the ball deflected off of a pitcher and stayed in the air, so it becomes a line drive out and you double a guy off at second base. At that point you start to think this might not be our day, but the guys battled. They fought through it."

On the series:
"The story right now is we are not swinging the bat real well and they are pitching it pretty well. I think we are pitching it pretty well. Any time you pitch it you have got a chance and we have had a chance in both of these games even though we haven't swung the bat real well. That is the good thing and I am glad to see that. If we weren't pitching it well, we wouldn't have a chance no matter how much we were hitting, but we are pitching it pretty good and right now we are not swinging it very good. Again that is the nature of baseball. You can pick up tomorrow's paper and read that about every big league team, somebody is going through it."

On tomorrow's game:
"The Sunday games all count the same, even though we try to segment and separate and try to take it a series at a time. We came here to try to win the series, but tomorrow's game counts just like today's does and so at the end of the season it is not about who won the most series it is about who won the most games. Sometimes on Sunday's you see some strange things, we talked about that last week. Sometimes you see teams that are fatigued. Sometimes you see teams that are complacent that have got their two wins in. Sometimes you see teams that just can't get it going and are beat before they ever get started. I have no idea what we will see tomorrow, but it will be one of those things probably. I know our guys are fighting to the end in this one and they have been fighting all year, so I would expect them to come out tomorrow and fight it hard."
