The No. 6 Baylor equestrian team will host the second annual Big 12 Equestrian Championship beginning Friday at 10:00 a.m. and wrapping up Saturday starting at 9:00 a.m. The event, held at the Willis Family Equestrian Center, will mark the first time Baylor has hosted the conference competition.
"I am excited to host this year's Big 12 Championship," head coach Ellen White said. "I feel that the Big 12 stepping up and recognizing a conference championship for equestrian elevates our conference as well as Baylor as leaders for the sport of equestrian."
Last season's conference championship was held in Stillwater, Okla., and won by the host school, Oklahoma State. The Bears will be looking for the same magic heading into the weekend.
"Baylor has been instrumental in moving the sport forward by hosting the Equestrian National Championships," White said. "Now we can add hosting the Big 12 Championships at our own Willis Family Equestrian Center to our achievements. The generosity of our donors has given us the perfect facility to host Big 12, so it would be perfect if we can win it."
Baylor (7-8) will open as the No. 3 seed and face off against the No. 2 seed Oklahoma State (6-5). The Bears have dropped both contests to the Cowgirls so far this season, losing 14-9 in Stillwater on Oct. 16, and falling 11-8 in the final event of the season on March 5.
No. 1 seed Texas A&M (10-4) and No. 4 seed Kansas State (5-7) will also compete at 10:00 a.m., Friday. The Aggies have won both contests this season and are on a four-event win streak heading into the weekend.
The winners of each contest will face off on Saturday at 9:00 a.m. to determine the champion, while the losers will battle for third place.
