WACO, Texas - Western Kentucky jumped out to an early lead, and the Hilltoppers stranded six Baylor baserunners over the last four innings to hold on for a 6-2 win Sunday afternoon at Baylor Ballpark.
With the win, Western Kentucky (5-1) won the 2010 QTI Baylor Classic with a 3-0 record.
Matt Rice's two-run double in the first inning gave Hilltopper starting pitching Shane Cameron a lead he would never relinquish.
The Hilltoppers added an unearned run in the second when a pair of errors led to Jared Andreoli's RBI groundout. Andreoli added an RBI single in the fourth that gave Western Kentucky a 4-0 lead.
Cameron faced the minimum number of batters while allowing just a Logan Vick single through the first three innings, but Vick drew a leadoff walk in the fourth to get the Baylor offense started.
Joey Hainsfurther followed with a double into the gap in left-center, and one out later, Dan Evatt drilled a two-run single into left field to cut the deficit to 4-2, but the Hilltoppers quickly got those runs back.
Kes Carter led off the fifth with a solo homer, the first of the year allowed by Baylor pitching. Carter would be the last batter that starting pitching Willie Kempf would face.
Kempf took the loss after allowing four earned runs on seven hits in 4.0 innings. He walked one and struck out six.
Josh Turley came out of the bullpen and surrendered a homer to the first batter he faced, Matt Rice, giving the Hilltoppers a 6-2 lead.
Cameron worked two more scoreless innings before turning the game over to his bullpen. He earned the win by allowing two runs on five hits with two walks and eight strikeouts in 6.0 innings.
While Baylor reliever Kolt Browder kept the deficit at 6-2 with 3.0 innings of one-hit, shutout relief, the Western Kentucky bullpen struggled to keep the Bears off the bases, but managed to come up with big outs any time the Bears threatened to cut into WKU's lead.
Four Western Kentucky relievers combined to shutout the Bears over the last three innings, despite allowing six Baylor batters to reach base.
Turley allowed one run on two hits in 1.2 innings of relief. It was the first earned run surrendered by the Baylor bullpen this season. The group has now allowed just one earned run in 22.0 innings through seven games.
Evatt has three of the Bears' seven hits, finishing 3-for-4 with two RBI. Carter led Western Kentucky at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two runs and one RBI. Rice added three RBI in a 2-for-4 effort.
Baylor returns to action when it hosts BYU Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m. at Baylor Ballpark.
