HEB Invitational Draws

WACO, Texas
- Baylor's Karolina Filipiak won both of her singles matches on the day to earn a spot in the semifinals at the HEB Baylor Invitational on Saturday at the Baylor Tennis Center.

In the singles play, Filipiak lost her opening set of the day, but found her stroke in the next four sets in her two matches. Opening the day against fourth-seeded Lilly Kimbell of Georgia, Filipiak battled back from down a set (6-4) to win the second and third, 6-4, 6-3. In her second match, Filipiak cruised to a straight-set win over UT-Arlington's Daiana Negreanu with a score of 6-3, 6-1.

"Karo had another stellar day," assistant coach Alison Ojeda said. "In both matches, Karo proved to be the player who was capable of putting one more ball in the court. She did a great job of setting up the points and executing til the finish. Karo's coaches and teammates are really proud of the way she battled today, a great example for everyone."

In other singles action, Baylor's Aya Bara was defeated by Georgia's second-seeded Alex Anghelescu in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1.

On the doubles courts, UTA's combination of Monika Hadvigerova and Maria Martinez were able to defeat Baylor's duo of Filipiak and Bara in a tight match, 9-7.

"Although Aya took a couple of losses today, she left the courts with a lot more knowledge than she stepped on them," Ojeda said. "Both her doubles and singles matches taught her a lot about how she needs to train both on and off the court in order to be a great player; I believe she will improve tremendously due to today's experience."

Action will continue on Sunday with the semifinal and final rounds of the HEB Invitational at the Baylor Tennis Center. Doubles play will start at 8 a.m., followed by singles action at 9:15 a.m.
