ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The 24th-ranked Baylor men's golf team fired a final-round 296 Saturday to place seventh at the 56th annual William H. Tucker Intercollegiate.
Baylor finished the tournament at 23-over (293-298-296=887), one stroke behind sixth-place Pepperdine (22-over 886) and two strokes behind fifth-place BYU (21-over 885). The top four teams were separated by four strokes; San Diego State edged North Texas for the team title, shooting 10-over. Host New Mexico finished third 12-over, followed by New Mexico State in fourth at 14-over.
"This weekend was the same thing we've done in the past," head coach Greg Priest said. "We got off to a good start, but then we struggled when it came time for the second and third rounds.
Only five players finished the tournament under-par, while three players tied atop the leaderboard. New Mexico State's Joon Heui Lee, North Texas' Carlos Ortiz and Pepperdine's Andrew Putnam each finished at 4-under 212.
Freshman Niclas Mansson, making his collegiate debut as an individual, carded a final-round 73 to tie for 12th at 4-over (72-75-73=220). Mansson carded Baylor's best 54-hole score at the William H. Tucker by three strokes. Joakim Mikkelsen placed 21st after shooting 7-over (71-75-77=223), while Lorenzo Scotto finished 26th at 8-over (72-80-72=224).
"We had some good individual play, but we couldn't manage any consistency team-wise," Priest said. "There's a lot of stuff to work on and plenty of room for improvement in order to get where we want to go."
Senior Cody Paladino (74-72-79=225) and sophomore Ryan O'Rear (76-74-75=225) tied for 32nd at 9-over. After carding one of Baylor's two rounds of even-par 72, senior Payne Gniewek tied for 36th at 10-over (77-77-72=226).
The Baylor men's golf team returns to action Oct. 11-12 at The Jack Nicklaus Invitational in Columbus, Ohio.
