ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The Baylor men's golf team rebounded from a tough first round, shooting even-par over the final 36 holes to finish fourth at the 55th annual William H. Tucker Intercollegiate Saturday.

When lightning prematurely ended play Friday, Baylor was 7-under through 12 holes of the second round. The Bears finished the second round with a 3-under 285 and later carded a final-round 3-over 290 to finish at 4-over 868.

UNLV claimed the team title with a 21-under 843, followed by San Diego State at 5-under (291-276-292=859) in second and BYU in third at 3-over (287-293-287=867). Texas A&M (292-278-299=869) and Pepperdine (287-288-294=869) rounded out the top five in a fifth-place tie at 5-over.

"We're not where we need to be and still have a ways to go, but we're getting there," Baylor head men's golf coach Greg Priest said. "I thought Payne (Gniewek) and Joakim (Mikkelsen) played really well this weekend against a very competitive field."

Three Baylor Bears finished the 104-golfer tournament in the top 25. Junior Payne Gniewek notched his second straight top-20 finish, placing 12th at 2-under (68-72-74=214). Joakim Mikkelsen battled back from an opening-round 77 with back-to-back sub-par rounds to finish tied for 13th at 1-under (77-69-71=215).

"We have a lot of things to work on, but it's still early on in the season to get where we want to be," Priest said.

Mikkelsen's fellow countryman Morten Bergan finished tied for 24th with a 4-over 220 (74-72-74). Lorenzo Scotto fired a final-round 71 to finish tied for 48th at 7-over (76-75-71=223). Freshman Ryan O'Rear, who made his collegiate debut as an individual, shot a 15-over 231 (81-77-73) to finish tied for 75th. Junior Cody Paladino ended the weekend with a 17-over 233 (75-71-85), finishing tied for 85th.

The Baylor men's golf team returns to action in two weeks at The Wolverine at Radrick Farms Sept. 26-27 in Ann Arbor, Mich. Live scoring for the two-day event will be available at www.GolfStat.com.
