WACO, Texas - Baylor's equestrian team completed its fourth season with a banquet honoring the 2008-09 squad. The evening included team awards and recognition of the year's 20 letterwinners who participated in the team's outstanding season. While hosting the Varsity Equestrian National Championships for the third straight year, the English team finished a team-best fourth while the Western squad was tied for seventh.
Head coach Ellen White and assistant coach Trista Armstrong honored four riders as the year's MVP riders in the four competitive events. In English, Shelby White (senior, Waco, Texas) earned the Flat award and Lisa Goldman (freshman, Hawthorne Woods, Ill.) received the Fences honor. For Western, Allison Orosz (junior, Salem, Ohio) nabbed the Horsemanship decision and Madelyn Mooney (junior, Riverside, Calif.) was the Reining MVP. White and Orosz were all repeat winners from last season while Mooney is now a three-time team MVP.
Four Bears were also honored as the Most Improved Rider for their event: Flat - Margaret Beaudoin (junior, Portland, Ore.), Fences - Katie Ross (sophomore, Blaine, Wash.), Horsemanship - Lindsey Tomko (junior, Canfield, Ohio) and Reining - Michelle Reynolds (senior, Albuquerque, N.M.).
Two Sportsmanship awards were given, one to Western's Anna Bowers (sophomore, Granbury, Texas) and one to English's Kim Woodsum (freshman, Arlington Heights, Ill.). Ashley Smith (sophomore, Fulshear, Texas) and Blair Bergeson (freshman, Mora, Mo.) were named best barn day workers. Michelle Deroche (sophomore, Argyle, Texas) and Suzanna Nelson (freshman, San Marcos, Calif.) were named the team's best timer and back gate personnel and Amanda Miller (sophomore, Bridgewater, Va.) and Morgan Williams (sophomore, Alexandria, La.) earned best scribe kudos.
Additionally, the Bears also named their 2008-09 season letterwinners: Margaret Beaudoin, Nicole Brown, Katie Buss, Lindsay Douglas, Kara Fergusson, Lisa Goldman, Heather Healy, Kim Marlowe, Nicole McCoy, Amber Mooney, Madelyn Mooney, Meghan Murphy, Allison Orosz, Michelle Reynolds, Valtie Riddle, Mary Smitson, Lindsey Tomko, Kendra Vicary, Shelby White and Cara Wilson. Brown, Marlowe, McCoy, White and Wilson became the young program's first four-year letterwinners.
Honorary letterwinners include: Whitney McIlvain, Heather Levihn, Anna Bowers and Suzanna Nelson.
