The No. 1 Baylor equestrian team lost to the No. 4 Auburn Tigers 11-9, snapping their six-game winning streak. This is the first match the Lady Bears have lost this spring, but only the third all season.
Auburn continues to hold the all-time series record at 3-1, while winning four consecutive matches on the English side. The Tigers are coming off of two consecutive losses to No. 2 Georgia (12-7) and No. 5 South Carolina (10-8), and this is their first win since Jan. 24 when they crushed Delaware State 17-2.
In Equitation over Fences, the Tigers edged past the Lady Bears 3-2. Freshmen Lisa Goldman and Kara Fergusson tallied the only points for Baylor. Goldman defeated Auburn's Anna Schierholz 80-70, marking her seventh straight win. Fergusson advanced her season record to 7-3 after beating Grace Socha 78-75. Maggie McAlary of Auburn garnered MVP honors in her ride against Heather Healy (83-68).
Auburn breezed past Baylor 4-1 in Equitation on the Flat. Senior Shelby White posted the lone victory with a 79-75 win over Maggie McAlary. Auburn's Ali Loprete was named MVP in her 82-77 ride over Cara Wilson. The 7-3 Hunter Seat loss is first for the Lady Bears since they fell to No. 2 Georgia 8-2.
"Those SCC schools are all very strong English teams and we knew that going in," head coach Ellen White said. "Auburn had just lost its last two matches and I think they were hungry to win."
In Western riding, Baylor beat Auburn 6-4, improving its series record to 4-2. The Lady Bears downed the Tigers 4-1 in Horsemanship, while junior Allison Orosz earned her second consecutive MVP honor and her sixth straight win (77-60.5). Nicole McCoy (67-66.5), Meghan Murphy (76-74) and Lindsay Douglas (74.5-72) also added.
The Tigers finished out the match with a 3-2 victory in Reining. Senior Michelle Reynolds garnered MVP honors for the first time this season in her ride against Ashton Fairey (69-67.5). Sophomore Katie Buss recorded her ninth win of the season (71-69).
"Good win for Western. It's a good thing for us to get shaken up before we go, so we can practice a little harder and realize that teams can come in and beat us," White said.
The Lady Bears will head to Stillwater, Okla., where they will compete for the Big 12 Championship title on March 27 and 28.
