DENTON - The Baylor softball team (26-13) fell victim to a grand slam in the bottom of the sixth to drop game one, 7-5, but came back to win game two, 2-1 over North Texas (19-16) on Tuesday in Denton.
Tiffany Wesley, Kayce Walker and Meagan Weldon each registered three hits on the days for the Lady Bears.
With the Lady Bears leading 5-3 in the bottom of the sixth, North Texas' Lisa Johnson connected on a two out grand slam to give the Mean Green a 7-5 lead, and the win.
Baylor jumped out to an early lead as Courtney Oberg and Alex Colyer led off the inning with singles. A sacrifice bunt by Kalee Young advanced both runners to scoring position, and Colyer came in to score on a sac fly to left by Sydney Wilson for a 1-0 lead.
The Lady Bears scored two more in the third, beginning with back-to-back one-out singles from Bree Hanafin and Megan Turk. Oberg then delivered her own single to center, only to see the fielder bobble the ball, allowing Hanafin to score from second. Colyer advanced via a fielder's choice, and with two outs, forced a rundown that allowed Turk to score from third for a 3-0 lead.
North Texas answered with two runs after an RBI-double and RBI-single as part of a four hit inning in the bottom of the third.
Baylor came back with two more in the fifth, as Tiffany Wesley led off with a single and stolen base, allowing Kayce Walker to bring her around after a single to center. With Walker at third, Turk grounded out to short for an RBI and 5-2 advantage.
The Mean Green added an RBI-single in the bottom of the fifth to cut the Lady Bear lead to two.
Jenny Isham lasted 2.2 innings, allowing six hits and two runs, while Brittany Turner took the loss after going 3.1 innings, giving up seven hits, five runs, one earned and striking out three.
Game Two
Baylor outhit the Mean Green 9-4 en route to a 2-1 victory in the nightcap.
T. Wesley led off the first with a single, and with two outs, came around to score on a single down the left field line by Turk for a 1-0 lead.
North Texas answered in the third with a solo shot to right center that hit the top of the wall and bounced over to tie the game at one.
Baylor loaded the beases with a pair of singles and a walk in the fourth, and after a pair of strikeouts, T. Wesley singled through the right side for an RBI and a 2-1. The Lady Bears would leave the bases juiced after a Walker groundout to the pitcher.
Shaina Brock (7-2) picked up the win after going 4.1 innings, allowing three hits, one run and striking out five. Whitney Canion came on to pick up her first save of the season, giving up just two hits and striking out three in 2.1 innings.
Meagan Weldon went 3-for-3 on the day, while T. Wesley had two hits with an RBI.
The Lady Bears will step back into conference play with a pair of games against Oklahoma starting at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The contest with the Sooners will be able to be heard live on 104.9 FM.
