WACO - The Baylor softball team (10-3 overall) scored all eight of its runs in two innings of play, completing the three-game sweep of Sam Houston State (6-7 overall) with an 8-1 win Sunday afternoon at Getterman Stadium. With the victory, the Lady Bears have won four in-a-row and 10 of their last 11.
"We got good contribution throughout the lineup today," head coach Glenn Moore said. "Our freshmen were really good today and I think you can see they are starting to find their way a little bit."
Whitney Canion (7-3) notched her seventh complete game effort, allowing one run on five hits and striking out 10. The freshman now has six 10-plus strikeout games on the season and sits one away from tying Stacey Miller for second on the all-time list.
Baylor's freshmen led the way offensively, as Kayce Walker went 3-for-4 with a run scored and a stolen base, while Bree Hanafin and Megan Turk each recorded two RBI apiece.
Baylor got all the runs Canion would need in the second, as Alex Colyer led off the inning with single to center. An error by the shortstop allowed Meagan Weldon to reach first, and with two outs, Bree Hanafin laced a single into center filed, scoring Colyer and Weldon. Hanafin then created her own run, stealing second and advancing all the way home when the throw got into center and was bobbled by the center fielder.
Sam Houston cut into the Lady Bear lead in the third, when a double by Casie Everitt doubled to right center, scoring Morgan Mikulin, making the score 3-1.
BU put the game out of reach in the sixth, scoring five runs on five hits that began with a Kayce Walker single. Brette Reagan followed with a single of her own, allowing Courtney Oberg to record the third-straight single of the inning, scoring Walker. A Colyer walk loaded the bases, and two batters later, Weldon walked to bring in a run. Megan Turk stepped up in a pinch hitting situation and belted a two-RBI single to center, scoring Sydney Wilson and Colyer. With two outs, Tiffany Wesley hit a sharp groundball into the hole at short for a single, scoring Weldon for an 8-1 advantage.
Baylor will remain home for a doubleheader against Oklahoma Christian on Tuesday beginning at 3:00 p.m.
