WACO, Texas - The Baylor softball team (5-2 overall) picked up a pair of wins in day two of the Getterman Classic, including a come from behind, 3-2 win over Ole Miss in the nightcap. The Lady Bears are now 4-0 on the weekend and have won five-straight games.
Baylor 7, UTSA 3
In game one against UTSA, Baylor jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. A Brette Reagan single sent Nicole Wesley to third and a throwing error by the second baseman let her cross the plate for a 1-0 advantage. With two outs, Courtney Oberg delivered a single to center, scoring Reagan for a 2-0 lead.
The Lady Bears added two more in the third when Kayce Walker led off with a double down the the left field line. After a N. Wesley single, Reagan delivered an RBI single, scoring Walker. Reagan took off for second on the next pitch and got caught in a rundown, allowing N. Wesley to score from third, and eventually stole second.
Baylor made it a 5-0 lead in the fifth when Alex Colyer ripped a single down the left field line allowing N. Wesley, who singled, to score.
Starter Whitney Canion ran into some trouble in the bottom of the inning, walking a batter and allowing a single, and she gave way to Brittany Turner. After an error by Reagan loaded the bases, Kristin Kapler delivered a two-RBI single to bring the Roadrunners within three, but Turner retired the final two batters to end the threat.
Baylor added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh, as Walker again led off the inning with a hit. She advanced to second on a wild pitch and made it to third after Reagan hit into a fielder's choice. Another wild pitch brought Walker around and an Oberg sac fly brought Reagan in for a 7-2 lead.
UTSA added one run in the bottom of the seventh, but it was not enough, as Baylor took its first game of day two, 7-3.
Whitney Canion (3-1) got the win after throwing 4.1, allowing five hits, two runs, two walks and seven strikeouts.
Baylor 3, Ole Miss 2
Baylor and Ole Miss were locked in a pitcher's duel until the top of the fourth when Lisa Conchos led off with a single and Lauren Grill followed with a two-run shot to left for a 2-0 Rebels lead.
Ole Miss starter, Becky Nye maintained a no-hitter through 4.1 innings until Megan Turk pinch-hit and singled to shortstop to break up the attempt. With runners on second and third and two outs, Meagan Weldon popped up to second to end the threat.
Canion gave up a single and a walk with one out in the sixth, giving way to Shaina Brock in relief. After allowing a single to the first batter to load the bases, Brock settled in to retire the next two batters with strikeouts, leaving the bases loaded.
The Lady Bears took the momentum and tied the game in the sixth. Walker was hit by the first pitch and advanced to second on a fielder's choice when the throw could not beat her to the bag. Reagan then singled through the right side, scoring Walker to cut tht lead in half. With one out, Oberg delivered a squeez bunt, and Nicole Wesley slid in safe to tie the game.
Brock retired the side in the top of the seventh, setting the stage for the Baylor offense in the bottom half of the inning. Bree Hanafin singled to lead things off, and Weldon delivered a sac bunt to advance her to second. Walker stepped to the plate and singled to right field, allowing Hanafin to score from second for the win.
Brock (1-1) picked up the win in relief, throwing 1.2 innings, striking out three and allowing just one hit.
Baylor will wrap up the Getterman Classic on Sunday against Stephen F. Austin at 1:00 p.m. at Getterman Stadium.
