WACO, Texas - The No. 2 Baylor equestrian team beat No. 5 Oklahoma State 14-6, making it their fifth consecutive win. The Lady Bears improve their record to 10-2, while sweeping MVP honors.
The Lady Bears advanced their series record against the Cowgirls to 2-5, after a previous 15-9 loss in Stillwater on Oct. 18. Western recorded their first win in the series, while English pushed to 2-6.
"This is a big win for us today. We compete against Kansas State next week and if we win, we'll be number one in Big 12," head coach Ellen White said. "It would be so exciting to win a Big 12 Championship because it is the first time that they are hosting it. My biggest challenge as a coach, at this point, is going to be to keep the girls sharp. The girls are riding great and I really do feel like this is showing them that they are in the game and can do this."
The Lady Bears breezed past the Cowgirls 7-3 in Hunter Seat with a 4-1 victory in Equitation over Fences and 3-2 on the Flat. Heather Healy (79-77), Kendra Vicar-77), Kendra Vicary (76-73), and Lisa Goldman (87-77) tallied points, while Nicole Brown garnered MVP honors with her demanding win over Alice White 85-35.
Junior Mary Smitson earned the MVP spot, for the third time this season, in the Flat with her defeat over Ally Blais 84-80. Healy posted her second win of the day 80-65 and Margaret Beaudoin (59-52) also added.
Baylor downed Oklahoma State 5-0 in Western Horsemanship, with junior Lindsay Douglas claiming the MVP spot for the second time this season in her ride against Suzanne Randolph (73-69.5). Veterans Allison Orosz (74-73.5), Lindsey Tomko (73.5-69.5) and Nicole McCoy (73.5-70) had winning rides, along with freshman Meghan Murphy (70-68.5).
Oklahoma State outscored Baylor 3-2 in Reining, but sophomore Katie Buss earned her first MVP honor of the season with her winning ride over Molly Tipton 72-69.5. Junior Valtie Riddle was the only other Lady Bear to tally points against the Cowgirls (69-67).
After today's loss, Oklahoma State drops its season record to 5-3. The Cowgirls next match will be Feb. 28 in Stillwater, Okla., where they will face Delaware State.
Next up for Baylor is a Saturday, Feb. 21 matchup with No. 9 Kansas State at the Willis Family Equestrian Center. Kansas State enters the competition 3-5, after a recent loss to Oklahoma State 11-13.
