DALLAS - The 43rd-ranked Baylor men's golf team shot a final-round 279 to finish fourth at the 2009 Baylor Intercollegiate Tuesday at Royal Oaks Country Club. The final day was stretched to 30 holes after play was suspended Monday evening due to rain.
Texas A&M repeated as Baylor Intercollegiate team champion, shooting a final-round 273 (15-under). The Aggies won by three strokes; SMU finished second at 1-under, followed by Iowa in third (13-over) and Baylor and New Mexico in a fourth-place tie at 14-over.
"Monday was all about survival," Baylor head men's golf coach Greg Priest said. "The weather was horrible and we needed to mentally stay in there and not give up. We knew we would have good weather today."
SMU's James Kwon also defended his 2008 Baylor Intercollegiate title. Kwon, who shot a first-round 76 Monday, bounced back to shoot 11-under over the final 36 holes to finish at 6-under 207. Baylor sophomore Joakim Mikkelsen fired a final-round 69 to finish fourth at 3-under (70-71-69=210). It is Mikkelsen's first career top-five and fifth career top-10 finish.
Junior Michael McKinley, competing as an individual, carded his best round and tournament of his collegiate career. The Dallas, Texas, native carded a career-low 68 in the final round in his season debut to finish tied for 10th at 1-over (76-70-68=214). McKinley's 10th-place finish is his first in three career tournaments.
"I'm very excited for Michael's (McKinley) top-10 finish," Priest said. "It was really special for him to come back and play on his home golf course. He's very close to breaking out and hopefully this performance gets him over the hump. I won't be surprised to see him in the lineup next spring."
Cody Paladino and Lorenzo Scotto both finished tied for 23rd at 6-over 219. Payne Gniewek shot a career-low 67 during Tuesday's final round to finish tied for 30th at 8-over 221. Individual Austin Berkovsky and Morten Bergan shot 14-over to finish tied for 47th.
Baylor, which concluded its fall season with five top-five finishes, opens its spring campaign Feb. 15-16, 2010, at the UTSA Oak Hill Invitational in San Antonio, Texas.
"We're trying to stay consistent," Priest said. "Our goal coming into the season is always to finish in the top five, which we accomplished this semester. We haven't played great yet, but there is a lot of room for improvement. We have a great opportunity with a competitive schedule and experienced guys to have a successful spring season."
