Bears Drop Finale at Texas Tech 12-5

LUBBOCK, Texas -- Roger Kieschnick's second-inning grand slam gave Texas Tech a 7-1 lead, and the Red Raiders never looked back en route to a 12-5 victory over Baylor in Sunday afternoon's Big 12 Conference series finale at Dan Law Field. The Bears (31-24, 11-16) dropped two of three in the series and have lost five consecutive series at Texas Tech (25-30, 9-18), dating back to a 2-1 series victory in 1998.
Despite the loss, Baylor will be the sixth seed in next week's Big 12 Conference Championship at Bricktown Ballpark in
Baylor scored a run on Shaver Hansen's bases-loaded sacrifice fly in the top of the first but could manage nothing more. Tech quickly answered with two runs on two hits, two walks and a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first. Monk Kreder led off the second with his third home run of the season. Two singles and a Baylor error loaded the bases, setting the stage for Kieschnick's 17th home run of the season and his third of the weekend.
Starter Tim Matthews (5-2) took the loss for Baylor; he allowed seven runs, six earned, on six hits and two walks with no strikeouts over 1.2 innings. Randall Linebaugh and Willie Kempf could not stop the bleeding out of the bullpen, allowing two runs and three runs, respectively. Nick Cassavechia worked a scoreless eighth inning with two strikeouts.
Tech starter Nate Karns (3-6) held the Bears to a pair of runs on five hits and two walks with five strikeouts over 5.0 innings to earn the victory.
Baylor's eight hits on the day came from four players. Adam Hornung was 3-for-4 with two home runs and four RBI; it was the first multiple-homer game of his career and Baylor's first since Aaron Miller had two March 30 at Oklahoma. Ben Booker and Dustin Dickerson had two hits each, and Raynor Campbell led off the game with a single.
