TRINITY, Texas -
The Baylor men's golf team held its third-round position, finishing the final round in fifth place at the 2008 Big 12 Men's Golf Championships.
Oklahoma State won its sixth conference championship, finishing the four-round tournament at 11-under par. The Cowboys also had the top two individual finishers, medalist Rickie Fowler shot 9-under par for the tournament, while runner-up Kevin Tway finished at 5-under par.
The Bears finished in fifth place, three shots ahead of Kansas. Texas A&M took fourth place, 13 shots clear of the Bears. The fifth-place finish is the highest for Baylor since 2002 when the Bears placed fourth.
"Of course we are disappointed that we didn't win the tournament, that was our goal coming in," said head coach Greg Priest. "But we had our highest finish in six years, and I thought that our guys hung in there on a really tough course."
Colton Williams led the way for the Bears, finishing at 3-over par following a fourth-round 75. Williams, who finished 44th in 2007 in his first Big 12 tournament, finished this year's tournament in 10th place overall.
Bill Allcorn was Baylor's top finisher in 2007 in a tie for 11th place overall. Allcorn shot 75 on Sunday to finish in a tie for 18th place at 8-over par. Wes Williams shot Baylor's low round on Sunday, carding a 2-under par 70 in the final round. Williams finished the tournament in a tie for 25th overall at 11-over par.
Jeff Gerlich tied for 41st overall at 21-over par following a fourth-round 79 on Sunday. Cody Paladino carded a 79 on Sunday to finish at 30-over par in a tie for 54th-place overall.
"It just seemed like we couldn't get our fourth score down low enough to make a move," said Priest. "Each day someone different would struggle. But that's how it's been all year; we haven't really clicked. But we are coming together and are getting closer to playing to our potential."
Baylor will await selections for the NCAA Regional tournaments to be held on May 15-17 in Chattanooga, Tenn., Columbus, Ohio and Bremerton, Wash. Baylor has been selected to 10-straight regional tournaments.
