Final Stats
WACO - The Baylor Lady Bears (18-7 overall, 1-1 Big 12) used a complete game shutout by Kirsten Shortridge to defeat Iowa State (19-11 overall, 0-1 Big 12) in its Big 12 home opener at Getterman Stadium Friday night.
Shortridge tossed seven shutout innings, giving up four hits, walking three and striking out two, moving her record to 4-2 on the year.
Tiffany Wesley had a good night at a plate, going 3-for-3 with three runs scored and an RBI, while KJ Freeland went 2-for-3 and Courtney Oberg had two RBI on a pair of sacrifice flies.
The Lady Bears got on the board in the first when Shortridge legged out a double down the left field line. T. Wesley sacrificed her to third, and she scored on a sac fly by Oberg for a 1-0 lead.
Baylor added another run in the third as T. Wesley singled to third and advanced to third after a fly ball to deep center of the bat of Brette Reagan was dropped by the center fielder. That allowed Oberg to hit her second sac fly, scoring Wesley for the 2-0 advantage.
Another Lady Bear run crossed the plate in the fifth after T. Wesley led off with a single to the pitcher and was brought around to score on the next at-bat as Reagan ripped a double down the left field line for an RBI.
Baylor registered a pair of insurance runs in the sixth as Morgan Craig stole second to get in scoring position for T. Wesley, who singled to center for an RBI. Reagan then blasted a ball to left, which was dropped by the left fielder, allowing T. Wesley to score from second, making the score 5-0.
The Lady Bears will close out the series on Saturday against Iowa State at noon at Getterman Stadium. An Easter egg hunt with the team will follow.
