The sixth-ranked Baylor equestrian team downed No. 4 South Carolina in a 15-5 victory, improving their record to 5-1. In the competition, Baylor riders took MVP honors in three of the four events. This is Baylor's first win against South Carolina in three tries.
"This is a really good win for us, because this is not an easy team to beat," head coach Ellen White said. "Our girls really stepped up to the plate and had really fabulous rides."
The Lady Bears went 7-3 in Hunter Seat with a shutout in Equitation over Fences (5-0). Freshman Lisa Goldman achieved her second consecutive MVP honor with a 79-75 win. Senior Nicole Brown (79-54), Kendra Vicary (78-72), Anna Banks (77-68) and Kara Fergusson (56-50) also rode for victories.
"Our fence riders were just flawless and it showed. They didn't leave the door open for South Carolina to step into," White said.
The Gamecocks beat the Lady Bears in Equitation on the Flat 3-2. Sarah Stephens of South Carolina garnered MVP honors with her defeat over Margaret Beaudoin 91-72. Cara Wilson (77-0) and Heather Healy (78-69) posted the only winning rides for Baylor.
In Western Horsemanship, Baylor defeated South Carolina 4-1 with Lindsay Douglas earning the MVP spot in her ride against Hailey Thornton (79-75). Meghan Murphy (72.5-72), Lindsey Tomko (73.5-72.5) and Nicole McCoy (73.5-71) also tallied points.
The Lady Bears ended the match with another 4-1 win in Reining. Senior Kim Marlowe posted her first MVP honor of the season with a 72-66.5 victory over Hailey Thornton. Madelyn Mooney (69-64.5), Amber Mooney (71-65.5) and Katie Buss (72-70.5) also had winning rides.
Baylor will host Georgia on Nov. 21 at 2 p.m. and Texas A&M on Nov. 22 at 11 a.m.
