Box Score

WACO, Texas -- Shaver Hansen's 4-for-4 night led Baylor's 15-hit attack as the Bears defeated Texas Southern 16-4 in seven innings Wednesday night at Baylor Ballpark. Baylor (27-21) has won three straight and six of its last eight. The Bears also improved to 11-1 in midweek games this season.

Texas Southern (13-28) scored a run on two hits and a stolen base in the first inning. However, it was all Baylor after that as the Bears scored two runs in the bottom of the second and never trailed again. The Bears got another run in the third and then stretched their lead to 7-1 with a four-run fourth. Baylor put the game out of reach in the fifth, scoring nine runs. Texas Southern rallied for three runs on five hits in the seventh.

Hansen, who enjoyed a 5-for-5 night against Texas Southern earlier this season, doubled twice and drove in three runs. The only time Texas Southern has retired Hansen in 10 plate appearances this season was a sacrifice fly in the teams' first meeting this season. It was the first of his two doubles that plated the second run of the second inning and gave the Bears a lead they would never relinquish.

Raynor Campbell, Matt Czimskey, Dustin Dickerson and Beamer Weems all enjoyed two-hit nights. Campbell homered and drove in two, while Weems tallied three RBI. Ben Booker and Tim Jackson both had two-RBI nights, as well.

Cliff Springston, the second of four Baylor relievers in a predetermined committee game, was credited with the victory. Springston (3-3) allowed one hit with three strikeouts in 2.0 scoreless innings. Starter Wade Mackey was touched for a run on four hits with three strikeouts in 2.0 innings. Randall Linebaugh and Kendal Volz each worked a scoreless inning.

Texas Southern starter Danilio Carcamo (2-5) was saddled with the loss; he allowed seven runs on nine hits and two walks over 3.0 innings.

Baylor returns to Big 12 action this weekend, traveling to Lincoln, Neb., for a three-game series at Nebraska. The Bears and the Huskers meet Friday at 6:35 p.m., Saturday at 2:05 p.m. and Sunday at 1:05 p.m. All three games will be played at Haymarket Park. Saturday's game will be televised live on Nebraska Educational Television and rebroadcast May 14 at 5 p.m. on CSTV.

NOTES: Baylor improves to 7-0 all-time against Texas Southern and 10-0 all-time against teams from the Southwestern Athletic Conference. ... Czimskey (nine games) and Campbell (six games) both extended career-long hitting streaks. Booker (five games), Jackson (three games) and Weems (three games) also extended streaks. ... Baylor batted around in consecutive innings (fourth and fifth innings) for the third time this season. ... Baylor eclipsed the 90,000 mark in total season attendance Wednesday. It marks the fourth consecutive season and the sixth year in Baylor Ballpark's nine-year history that the 90,000-plateau has been eclipsed. ... Wednesday was Baylor's 20th home win of the season. The Bears have won at least 20 home games in each of Baylor Ballpark's nine seasons.
