Box Score

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. --- Robyn Wike's two-out, bases loaded clearing double in the top of the 12th inning proved to be the difference as Texas Tech stunned top-seeded Baylor, 8-4, in the opening round of the Big 12 Conference Championship. The loss eliminates the No. 5 Lady Bears from the tournament as Baylor drops to 45-13 on the season.

After Texas Tech grabbed the early 2-0 lead, Baylor responded with three runs in the fifth to grab a short-lived one-run lead. After Tiffany Wesley scored on a wild pitch to cut the lead to one, senior Ashley Monceaux gave the Lady Bears the lead with a double to score Kelsey Sage and Danielle Honnette to make the score 3-2.

The Red Raiders answered right back; however, as Jennifer Corkin delivered a two-out, solo home run over the center field wall to tie the score in the top of the sixth inning.

The score would remain the same into the 11th inning when Texas Tech grabbed the lead on Heather Parker's solo home run with two outs to give the Red Raiders a one-run advantage.

As has been the case all season, Baylor managed to fight back and tie the game. After Alex Colyer led off the inning with a single, Courtney Oberg delivered a single up the middle with one out to score Colyer from second to tie the game.

Texas Tech would manage to put the game away; however, with a four-run outburst in the 12th to give the Red Raiders the four-run win. With the bases loaded and two outs, Wike delivered a shot off the right field wall as all three runs came in to score to give Texas Tech a 7-4 lead.

The Red Raiders would add an insurance run in the inning as reliever Ashly Jacobs held the Lady Bears scoreless in the bottom of the inning to pick up the upset win to advance to the semifinals against Texas A&M.

Kirsten Shortridge took the loss, her first in nine straight decisions, after allowing five runs on five hits in 4.2 innings of work to fall to 16-4 on the season.

The Lady Bears will now await their seeding as well as opponents for the 2007 NCAA Softball Championship when the selections are announced on Sunday, May 12, at 2:00 p.m. on ESPNews.

Baylor will host a selection watch party for the softball team at the Stone Reception Room at the Ferrell Center. The watch party is free and open to the public.
