KANSAS CITY, Mo. - With it's dramatic 4-3 win over the University of Texas on Sunday, Baylor's women tennis team claimed its second straight Big 12 Championship title. Last year the Bears knocked off the Longhorns 4-0. Senior Iva Mihaylova, who clinched the match for the Bears, was named the championship's most outstanding player.

The victory at the Plaza Tennis Center in Kansas City, Mo., raised Baylor's record to 22-6, and extended its win streak to 14 matches, while the loss dropped Texas to 156-9 on the season.

The Bears had to earn the win the hard way after losing the doubles point. Texas' Vanja Corovic and Maria Milic downed Zuzana Cerna and Lenka Broosova on court one 8-4 to exit the court first. Baylor countered with a win at court three when Zuzana Zemenova and Mihaylova posted an 8-2 win over Stephanie Davison and Jane Pringle. Couorney Zauft and Ristine Olson secured the doubles point with an 8-4 win at No. 2 over Zuzana Chmelarova and Klara Zrustova.

Broosova, a freshman, evened the match with a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 3, extending her win streak to 14 matches. Wins by Cerna and Chmelarova at courts two and four, respectively, would give the Bears a 3-1 edge. At this point, the Bears needed just one more victory out of the three remaining singles matches. After winning the first set 6-2 at court five, Zrustova dropped the next two to allow Texas to edge closer. On court one Zemenova lost the first set 6-1 but rebounded the take the second 6-4. However, Corovic posted a 6-3 win in the third set to even the match at 3-3. Now it was all on the shoulders of Mihaylova and Texas' Sarah Lancaster. Lancaster had won the first set in a tiebreaker, 7-6(2), When play was completed on court one, Mihaylova had just won the second set 6-3. Baylor's superior conditioning was evident in the third set as Mihaylova dominated Lancaster 6-0 in the deciding set to earn the win for the Bears. The victory raised Mihaylova's win streak to 17 matches.
