WACO, Texas --- No. 2 Arizona used an excellent performance from starting pitcher Taryne Mowatt as the Wildcats took game one of a three-game series against the Lady Bears, defeating No. 14 Baylor, 3-0, in action on Getterman Stadium on Friday. With the loss, Baylor saw its seven-game win streak snapped and fell to 22-5 on the season while Arizona improved to 17-3 on the year.
The Wildcats jumped out to the early lead, scoring two in the bottom of the first to grab a two-run advantage. Mowatt and Sam Banister each delivered RBI singles in the inning as Baylor was unable to work out of a bases loaded and one-out jam.
With Baylor unable to get anything going, Mowatt extended the lead when she drilled a solo home run, her first of the season, over the left field wall in the top of the fifth to make the score 3-0.
The junior right-hander was in control the rest of the way as she allowed only two Baylor base-runners to reach base in the contest as she improved to 10-4 on the season after allowing one hit and one walk while striking out 15.
Kirsten Shortridge did a good job of keeping the Lady Bears within striking distance; however, took the first loss of her Baylor career and fell to 8-1 on the season after allowing three runs on five hits in seven innings of work.
Ashley Monceaux picked up the only hit in the contest as Baylor was shut out for the first time in 61 games (Georgia Tech, 3/24/06) and fell at home for the first time this season.
