WACO, Texas --- The No. 12 Baylor softball team swept a pair of games from Oklahoma Baptist, defeating the Lady Bison, 6-1, in game one before claiming a 6-1 victory in game two in action at Getterman Stadium on Thursday. With the sweep, Baylor improves to 28-9 on the season.
Nicole Wesley led the way for Baylor in game one, going 4-for-4 on the night with two runs and two RBI as the freshman collected her second career four-hit game to tie the Baylor single-game hit record.
After Oklahoma Baptist took the early lead with a single run in the first, Baylor responded with single runs in the second and third to take the lead for good. Kelsey Sage delivered a RBI single in the second while Chelsi Lake produced a run with a single in the third to give Baylor the 2-1 lead.
Ashley Monceaux would provide the key blast in the contest, lifting a towering two-run home run down the right field line, her tenth of the season, to score N. Wesley to give Baylor a 4-1 lead in the fifth.
Baylor finished the scoring in the contest as N. Wesley plated Tiffany Wesley and Jordan Daniels with a single to left field as Brittany Turner sent the Lady Bison down in order in the seventh to close out the contest.
Kirsten Shortridge picked up the victory for Baylor, allowing only one run on three hits in 4.2 innings of work as she struck out six to improve to 9-3 on the season.
Turner pitched 2.1 innings of scoreless relief, allowing only one hit as she picked up her first career save.
Lauren McKay took the loss for Oklahoma Baptist after allowing six runs on 11 hits in six innings of work to fall to 6-8 on the season.
It was more of the same in game two as Oklahoma Baptist quickly jumped out to an early lead with a run in the first inning. However, Baylor would respond with a run in the first, followed by three in the second to take control of the game.
After T. Wesley scored on an error in the first, the freshman would give the Lady Bears the lead for good as her single in the second scored Shortridge to make the score 2-1. N. Wesley would put the game away as she followed with a two-run single, her second of the night, to score T. Wesley and Alex Colyer to give the Lady Bears a three-run cushion.
Colyer and Courtney Oberg put the finishing touches on the victory with RBI hits in the third as Monceaux tossed the final four innings of the contest, holding the Lady Bison scoreless, to pick up the win and improve to 5-1 on the season.
Whitney Heltzel took the loss for Oklahoma Baptist and fell to 4-9 on the season after allowing six runs on seven hits in six innings of work.
Baylor will return to action when the Lady Bears open Big 12 Conference play on Saturday, March 24, at 2:00 p.m. when they host Nebraska for the first game of a two-game series.
