HONOLULU, Hawai'i - Alex Colyer delivered a two-out, RBI single in the top of the seventh to break a 2-2 tie as the No. 10 Baylor softball team rebounded from a loss in day one of the tournament to defeat No. 23 Hawai'i, 3-2, in action at Rainbow Wahine Stadium on Thursday. With the win, Baylor improves to 25-6 on the year while Hawai'i fell to 24-7 in the loss.
Ashley Monceaux gave the Lady Bears the early lead with a two-run blast in the top of the first inning. On a 2-1 pitch from Justine Smethurst, Monceaux lifted a shot well over the left field wall for her ninth home run of the season, scoring Nicole Wesley from second to give the Lady Bears an early 2-0 lead.
Hawai'i cut the lead in half in the bottom of the second as Tyleen Tausaga delivered a solo home run down the right field line to make the score 2-1. The Rainbow Wahine would finally break through for the tying run in the bottom of the sixth as Valana Manuma delivered a two-out, run-scoring single to tie the score at 2-2.
Baylor managed to answer right back; however, to take the lead for good. After Miriam Romero led off the inning with a double, Smethurst retired the next two batters to bring up Colyer. Once again, the sophomore delivered as she looped a single into left field scoring Romero from second as Colyer picked up her fourth game-winning hit in the last five Baylor wins.
Baylor starter Lisa Ferguson did the rest of the work, shutting down Hawai'i in the bottom of the inning to pick up her 11th win of the season. Ferguson was excellent in the victory, allowing only two runs on four hits while striking out nine batters.
Smethurst took the loss for Hawai'i and fell to 9-5 on the season after allowing three runs on seven hits in seven innings of work.
Baylor will conclude round-robin play at the Hawai'i Invitational on Friday, March 16, when the Lady Bears face Nevada at 5:00 p.m. before a meeting with Liberty at 7:00 p.m.
